Toyota set indoor World Record... we think!
By Nick Sparkes
July 16 2006
With the help of BBC TopGear the Toyota Formula One team have set a new indoor speed record. Using the London Excel building, home to the 2006 London motorshow, they drove one of last years Toyota's down the length of the Excel setting a new indoor speed record.
In fact, according to TopGear, there has been no such attempt in the past making the attempt done by a Formula One car one of the first. The car was driven by 'The Stig', an unnamed racing driver, who first tested the surface in their Chevrolet Lacetti setting a top speed of 70 mph. Then the Toyota Formula One took centre stage, burning up its rear wheels as it left the line. On TV it looked pretty fast, probably through the use of clever editing. The speed though was more surprising, the Toyota Formula One car, complete with V10 engine, set an indoor speed record of 81 mph, 11 mph more than the £10,000 Lacetti. The reasons being the Toyota couldn't stop spinning its wheels on the slippery surface, and by the time it had straightened itself up, it was already time to slam on the brakes.
