SPARKY on Red Bull
By Nicholas Sparkes

So we’ve heard the adverts and read the warnings, DON’T drink and drive. But try and explain that to Scotsman David Coulthard and a bunch of Formula 3000 truck drivers!

Drink n’ Drive

Yes, Red Bull Racing will make MP’s cry and health and safety campaigners roll out of bed, with their own Formula One team. But, Red Bull isn’t an alcoholic drink so it shouldn’t endanger driving too much, but drink a bit more then you should and your be dying for a pee whilst doing 70 mph down the Motorway… not very helpful.

So their 2005 challenger is here, the RB1. Maybe one of the fastest and maybe most stunning moving build boards you have ever seen! No really, with their only sponsor Red Bull it’s an excellent shop window to promote their latest drink, which I expect will boost sales and run profits into the billion’s come the next few months. Well, that’s the problem, is it one big ad or a Formula One team? Is this mean’t to be the ultimate high street flier or something to keep the sport alive? I’m not so sure. With the sacking of Tony Purnell and David Pitchforth who wanted experienced drivers such as Coulthard and Davidson, who made Jaguar a wild cat and not a soft kitten, we now have Christian Horner who will follow Dietrich Mateschitz instructions and push forward as many Red Bull backed drivers as possible in 30 minutes, this isn’t how a Formula One team makes success, look at Ferrari, how many changes happen there? Now, compare that to whats gone on with Jaguar/Red Bull in their short history. I feel the team could be a disaster on roller skates, I’m overjoyed Jaguar was rescued from the homeless and jobs are saved but honestly, the minute Red Bull start to fade away down the grid I expect Dietrich Mateschitz to punch a hole in the can of Red Bull that is his Formula One cars and walk away.

I don’t expect the team to perform as highly as you would expect, Sauber (the top independent team around) understand how Formula One works and they have some great people working on this season’s car, compared to some Formula 3000 guy’s who cut their holidays short during the winter break. When you have teams like Toyota on the grid, which is a large manufacture employing hundreds of skilled workmen and women, errors by independent teams send them right to the back and they remain there as if they stuck super glue to their wheels. Like I said, DON’T drink and drive!
