I think this is the wrong perception of Jarno Trulli. If this was the case then why was it that in 2004, prior to Jarno moving to Toyota, near-end season, he had more points then Alonso - in the same team, with the same car. And prior to this, Button was kicked out of Renault, whilst Jarno stayed; and must I say, that he "burned" Button when they were teammates. This year, he has a teammate, who is in par with, as most people would agree with, Montoya. But the story is the same, Trulli is in front.
In my opinion, the perception of Jarno Trulli by the general public, and racing fans alike, is truly wrong. Jarno is, no doubt, an exception qualifier, put him against the best racers - bets on, he would probably out qualify them (names like Michael, Kimi, Alonso, etc)... now comes the difficult part. I believe that Trulli is seen as a lousy driver because of his qualifying skills; he simply gets more than the car gives when he qualifies, something that no driver, today, can do often. I believe when racing Jarno Trulli, when the car is behaving normal, gets 100% from his car. The perception that he "sleeps" at the wheel cannot be considered. In Formula 1, there can be no room for error, and simply "sleeping" at the wheel will have dramatic and dangerous conclusion.
So what should be the perception of Jarno Trulli as a qualifier and racer? "He gets a minimum of 110% from the car when he qualifies, and races with 100% of the cars capabilities." People may argue that this is a "perfect" driver, but there must be driver errors, and other factors taken into consideration, this is simply a GENERAL STATEMENT.
Enter the debate; is Jarno a fantastic qualifier AND a good racer? Or does he only live up to one those two qualities? Whatever your thoughts, add them to your message board thread by clicking here.
