Continuing his work at the wheel of chassis R27-05, Heikki was able to complete a hefty development programme, which saw him complete 123 laps. The Finn worked on chassis set-up to find a consistent balance, before conducting aerodynamic evaluations, and tyre comparisons over long runs.. The aim was to evaluate tyre wear on this demanding circuit, and analyse the handling of the R27. At the end of the day, Heikki was fourth, with a best time of 1:22.378.
This is an important test session for the team, as preparations are made for the next two races on the 2007 calendar: Spain and Monaco. This is why, after yesterday’s rain, the team has taken advantage of the opportunity to complete an additional day’s running at Barcelona. Tomorrow, Giancarlo Fisichella will take the wheel of the R27 for the final day of work before the fourth round of the 2007 F1 season.
Heikki Kovalainen: “I think we made good progress with the aero tests today, and we compared the two tyre types over long runs to compare the tyre wear and the car’s handling. The results of our work were encouraging. What’s more, I have driven in wet and dry conditions this week, which means I am feeling well-prepared for next week’s race. I am now really looking forward to seeing how the weekend goes.”
Christian Silk, Chief Test Engineer: “We had planned a big programme today to catch up the track time we lost yesterday, and we managed to complete every item, which is pleasing. There were some interesting developments in chassis set-up, and I think they are promising for the coming races. We are moving in the right direction, and we hope that our situation will improve a little in the coming weeks.”
