2008 French Grand Prix, Sunday
By Renault F1
June 22 2008
The ING Renault F1 Team saw both its cars in the points at this afternoon’s French Grand Prix as Nelson Piquet and Fernando Alonso finished in 7th and 8th places respectively in the team’s home race. Having shown competitively all weekend, Fernando and Nelson lined up in 3rd and 9th places on the grid.

An eventful start saw Fernando lose ground, but Nelson gained a place and enjoyed an exciting battle with the McLarens in the early stages of the race.

As the race developed, both drivers adopted two stop strategies, with Nelson able to run a longer first stint than his teammate. That allowed both men to race competitively in the points paying positions for the whole afternoon, with Fernando and Nelson emerging from their second stops in 7th and 8th places. Those positions were then reversed as a rain shower hit the circuit in the closing stages, which made for an exciting end to the race as Nelson scored his first points in Formula 1.

Having taken its first double points finish of the season, the team will look to carry its momentum into next week’s test at Silverstone to be well prepared for the British Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Fernando Alonso P8
I have to be disappointed today. I am sure we could have fought for the podium, but I lost too many positions at the start, and after that I was not able to find the pace I had shown yesterday. The car was fast in a straight line, but I still couldn’t make any progress. I scored a point, but I’m determined to do better for the British Grand Prix.

Nelson Piquet P7
It’s the first time that everything has gone without any problems for me. The car and the team’s strategy worked well and I was able to score my first couple of points today. I am happy and I hope that we can continue like this for the rest of the season.

Flavio Briatore, Managing Director ING Renault F1 Team
We had other hopes for today, but we are happy nonetheless to see our two cars finish in the points. Fernando lost some positions at the start and we were not able to come back from that. Nelson had a remarkable race, very consistent and aggressive, and I am very pleased to see him score his first points today.

Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering
Both cars in the points, but we still feel a little bit disappointed. We took a risky strategy with Fernando, but had to alter it after the start and so it was far from ideal. It’s clear that we still need to find more speed in the car, but we are pleased with Nelson’s first points finish.

Nelson Piquet: "I knew this moment would come"

Nelson, tell us about your race...
NP:
I made a good start and so by the end of the first lap I was in 8th place. The car was well balanced and fast, and my strategy was good. Not making it through to Q3 actually turned out to be an advantage: it became 9th on the grid and so I could choose my strategy and we decided to start the race havy on fuel. It was the best solution if it was going to rain. I think I was also helped by the fact that the McLarens were penalised. But, saying that, I was able to hold them off for a long time at the start of the race and I was controlling their pace.

Your start to the season has been difficult. How has it been for you?
NP:
There was pressue, of couse, but I never let it turn into something negative. I know what I am capable of, and I never doubted that I would have the chance to finish in the top 8. For me, the result today is just the first step...

First points in F1 on Renault's home ground in the French Grand Prix: it's a symbolic moment isn't it?
NP:
Yes, it's the best time to get my first points.

Looking at the weekend overall, could you have done any better?
NP:
You can always do better and I would have liked to improve a thousand things. In qualifying, there are things I can improve as I missed out on Q2 by a few hundredths of a second; we must try and understand why.

What are the next steps?
NP:
The team starts testing at Silverstone next week, then we have the British Grand Prix. The objective there will be to achieve a similar performance tp what we did today, which should be possible.

Fernando Alonso: "A big disappointed"

Fernando, what are your feelings after the French Grand Prix?
FA:
It made us realise, once again, that we have to be realistic. The Ferraris were a second faster than us, and our pace in the race did not allow us to be as competitive as in qualifying. That means that some cars got ahead - the Toyota of Trulli, the McLaren of Kovalainen etc...We should not be too negative as I know that the team is working very, very hard to allow us to move forward, but we are not yet able to fight for the podium regularly.

Was your strategy unsuitable today?
FA:
I think that the best strategies in the world cannot work if you have a car that is missing speed in race conditions. If I had to point out the main problem of the race, it was certainly the start. We had a problem with the mapping and I lost two places. That affected the rest of my race and after that the car was not as good as it was yesterday. That could be because it was not as well suited to the lower track temperatures or because the tyres did not come up to temperature as they should have.

Not too disappointed to lose a pace to Nelson at the end of the race?
FA:
No. There was a Force India in front of me and he did not see me coming. He went to the outside and I had to dive down the inside to avoid it. So I lost the racing line and Nelson was there to benefit, and so I only lost a point.

very dissapointing race. wrong strategy, and poor performance for both drivers, fortunately it will be good for piquet to have more confidence in the future, but we have lost any chance if there was any to finish with the leaders at the end of the season.

the strategy did seem strange. i think alonso could have ran a little more fuel and still been up towards the front of the grid. the pace seemed there on the saturday but dropped of in the race

Yes like in spain team fuelled the car light for the glory lap an at the end unfortunately it didnt paid off in any case

lets face it,

we have to be consecuent,we dont have enough car to play with

a more conservative strategy will not bring up the podiums but at least some needed points to finish the season in a decent shape.

fingers crossed for last silverstone updates.

im still thinking the strategy was the right one, it all went wrong at the start, things would have been different if alonso could stayed at the front of trulli at the start, all the advantage of low fuel laps melted at the back of trulli.
From that point all the consentration of alonso went down.
