Renaults star driver and double world champion Fernando Alonso claimed victory for the ING Renault F1 team in todays Singapore Grand Prix after a dramatic race where the safety car was on track twice after accidents from the sister Renault of Nelson Piquet and Force India's Adrian Sutil on lap 51.
The first safety car happened after Nelson Piquet crashed his Renault into one wall then slid over the other side of the track into another. Luckily Alonso had pitted 3 laps earlier having gone with an aggressive strategy with qualifying far down the grid because of the problems in qualifying. The saftery car period allowed Alonso to move up into 5th position with the cars in front of him needing to stop shortly after the safety car period was over or take a penalty, for pitting when the safety car was on track.
From then on Alonso built up a great lead with a succession of quick laps. This lead was then cancelled out with the second safety car period, because of the accident involving the Force India. Alonso stayed ahead after the restart building his lead back up before nursing the car to the chequed flag.
The pace was there from the R28 all race and even all weekend.
All in all a brilliant result for the ING Renault F1 team, their first race victory since 2006 and Alonso's first in a year.
