It is still early in the year but the silly season has started this weekend with some rumours pointing on Trulli being replaced next season by BAR driver Jacques Villeneuve.
The Canadian driver is clearly looking for a more competitive car and has set his eyes in one of the big 3. The only seat out of these that is not guaranteed through contract is David Coulthard's who seems unlikely to loose against the Canadian thanks to his strong early form despite some retirements due to mechanical failures.
This makes Villeneuve more likely into looking at Renault. The Anglo French team has had a great start of the season that has seen them score points in all the four races so far and to have provisional 3rd position in the Constructor's Championship.
Villeneuve, that has also the advantage that talks fluent French could replace Trulli, that despite the fact that he has scored in 3 of the four races and has achieved a 5th place at Australia, could be under threat of being fired at the end of the season. Trulli has shown to be less competitive that his younger teammate Alonso that so far has scored two podiums in four races as well as a pole position in Malaysia, being the younger driver to set a pole in F1 history. Alonso has 17 points in the WDC for 9 of the Italian.
However, David Richards, BAR boss is happy with the effort Villeneuve is showing at BAR and could be interested in retaining the outspoken Canadian. Recently he was quoted as saying:
"You might read stories suggesting that Sato has a contract to race for us next year. This is not the case. We have some options but nothing is decided yet about Jacques and he is going really well. We have two drivers who are pushing one another, why would we want to change that?"
Sato has numerous time imply that he would have a racing seat for 2004 and Button has a long term contract so all the paddock assume that Villeneuve will have to find a new seat for 2004."
