Alonso: Monte-Carlo one-of-a-kind

May 26 2003
Alonso looks with respect at this weekend's GP as he has only raced twice at Monaco. However, he does not consider Monaco to be the most technical track on the calendar.
He believes, however, that concentration must be kept at all times during the race in order to prevent crashing:

"I don't think Monaco is very technical - there are more technical circuits than this one - but when it comes to concentration, it is the most demanding.", he says, "You can never let up for a moment, and you've always got to be giving over 100%. The slightest mistake can be very costly for the car. I've only raced at Monaco in Grand Prix twice in my life: once when I was in Formula 3000 and two years ago when I was with Minardi. But I had gearbox trouble and couldn't finish the race. My favourite part is the second section after the tunnel. This is a pretty fast section of the track and the most beautiful and spectacular."

Alonso believes Monaco can be important for his team as Renault has proven to be competitive over the years in this track:

"Because of its history, the great sporting moments it has witnessed, Monte-Carlo is one-of-a-kind. I feel that winning there means more than winning anywhere else. And I'm confident the car will be competitive. Last year it did well and I'm optimistic we'll do well again this year."

Alonso knows that a good result in Monaco is key to keep his position on the Drivers Championship.
