Within minutes and followings several drives the ball popped out to Goodridge on the wing for an easy try. Esher just couldn't get out of their own half and it wasn't long before MacDonald used his bulk to crash over under the post for the second try.
The third try came from Scott Mathie who from a scrum far out on the wing nipped down the blind side for another easy try.
The advantage of having Sean Davey a Premier ref meant that Leeds were dominating set pieces. However Esher finally crossed the half way line and were awarded a penalty that Neal Hallett converted.
The bonus point try was scored by JD following a flowing backs move from one side of the field to the other leaving JD alone on the wing for another easy try.
I was now preparing for my half time Pee, Pint and Fag when from nowhere an Esher centre I've nicknamed the Pink Panther picked up the ball on the halfway line and ran through the Leeds defence without being touched. I thought the half time whistle had blown or the defence were playing "statues" but the Esher players and fans went wild, a testimony to how highly this Leeds team is regarded.
H/T Leeds 26 Esher 8
The Esher try lifted their team and for the first 10 minutes of the second half they attacked Leeds only to be thwarted by great defence. Several subs were made Myall, Hinton and Hopcroft came on and it wasn't long before Leeds got back on top. A jinking run from Henry Paul from the middle of Esher's 22 saw him leave 3 players in his wake as he scored under the post. Hintons first touch of the ball saw him speed down the line to score the 6th try, Hints was showing real pace and soon after he was again racing down the wing for his second try. The final try came from Jason Strange his first for Leeds, it followed several minutes of forward pressure on the Esher line with Jason seeing a gap to dive over from short range.
Final Score Leeds 52 Esher 8
You will probably want to know how the 2 new starters Blackett and Strange played. Blackett seemed out of place on the wing and looked frustrated at not being involved, despite a few tries scored on the wing it wasn't his wing unfortunately. Strange is rarely flustered, he is reliable without being unpredictable, he kicked well and scored a debutante try.
There were several good performances, Clarke and Oakley tackled everything, JD and Macdonald made yards, Henry Paul is getting better each game and Hinton showed real pace when he came on but for me it was Eric Lund who stood out he was forever moving forward with 4 or 5 Esher players dressed in pink hanging off him like some sort of giant Blancmange as he made yards all game.
I came away thinking that we could have scored 100 points had Biggs and Welding played. We also had a touch of try line fever once we had secured our bonus point. The tactics seemed to disappear as player after player tried to score rather than move the ball to the wing where we looked most dangerous.Rhys picked up another 10 stitches but an eye injury to Vickerman looked far more serious, I hope he is OK
So another great win at a wonderful rugby club and a slip up at Exeter means that we are now 6 points ahead of the chasers.
