On the one hand, this change
to the regulations is intended to reduce costs in Formula One. On the other
hand, the FIA wants to challenge and promote technical reliability among the
teams. The BMW Sauber F1 Team shone in this department in 2008, as Nick Heidfeld
and Robert Kubica sailed through the season without a single withdrawal due to
a technical fault.
The team from Munich and Hinwil is faced with the problem of integrating slicks
into its race operation, whilst at the same time coping with the revisions to
the engine regulations. Furthermore, the BMW Sauber F1 Team engineers must also
grapple with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System KERS, which will make its debut
in Formula One this coming season.
