The team from Munich and Hinwil hopes to use the BMW Sauber F1.09 to mount a serious challenge for the World Championship title in 2009. The new model looks completely different to its successful predecessor, the F1.08. The new rules introduced for the 2009 season mean dramatic restrictions are in place regarding aerodynamics. As a result, the front wing is bulkier, while the rear wing is considerably smaller. Many additional wings have been consigned to history. Instead of grooved tyres, Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica will be underway on slicks in 2009.
The engine cover also conceals some radical innovations: the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, KERS, has been the subject of intensive testing in December. In addition, the mileage of the BMW P86/9 engine has been doubled. It must last at least three race weekends.
Seldom have so many questions been asked going into a roll-out. However, the BMW Sauber F1 Team is sure it has found the right answers.
