Session one at Istanbul was held in brilliant conditions with temperatures reaching 24° C. The perfect conditions allowed the BMW Sauber F1 Team pairing to test the new aero package including a twin diffuser the Munich and Hinwil based squad has brought to Istanbul.
In the first half of the session, Robert and Nick both held top-ten positions, thus giving the impression that the new aero package represents a step forward. Later in the session, however, while the other teams went for faster lap times, the BMW Sauber F1 Team once again focused on completing its scheduled preparation programme without minding the times.
During the course of the session, Robert and Nick both completed four stints, with Nick having to abort his third run as the session was temporarily red-flagged after some artificial grass that had been ripped up on the run-off next to the circuit was deposited on the track.
In the end, Robert completed a total of 22 laps and on his 17th he set a personal best time of 1:30.645 minutes to finish 16th on the time sheets. Nick crossed the line in 1:30.689 minutes to take 17th, right behind his team-mate. The German completed 20 laps and set his personal best time on his 15th lap.
The fastest lap time of the session (1:28.952 minutes) was clocked by Williams driver Nico Rosberg.
In the second 90-minute session, starting at 14:00hrs local time (12:00hrs BST), the BMW Sauber F1 Team will continue its test and preparation work for the remainder of the weekend.
