Great drive by Fisi, a 'messy' race for Sutil

Fisi leads various cars
By Karl King April 6 2008
Starting from very underwhelming positions on the grid today, the Force India team had a very mixed race in Bahrain. Whilst Fisichella looked good, ending up 12th ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Sutil suffered on the very first lap, being forced to pit with damage and never recovering through the race - winding up 19th and last.

Fisichella was at one point ahead of Rubens Barrichello in the race after a start Mike Gascoyne described as 'storming', but the Brazilian eventually emerged ahead of the Roman after the first pitstops, Rubens the last of the finishers not to be lapped by the leaders, keeping Fisi at bay until the end.

Fisi said, "I had a good start and I overtook some cars in turn one and then some more when some cars spun in turn seven."

He continued, "In the middle stint there were some problems with the soft tyres and they did not seem to work as well as they could have, but at the end of the race the hard tyres were working well and I was comfortable."

Force India's main amount of TV time came today with a battle for position between Fisi and Lewis Hamilton who was down the grid after a poor start and a controversial incident with ex-team mate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton eventually got the better of the FI driver on lap 31 before making his pit stop, the Brit subsequently finishing behind the team he now neighbours in the pitlane.

Unfortunately, more TV time came in the way of Adrian being lapped by the leaders, with the young German finishing two laps down after his dramas on the opening lap.

He commented, "After quite a good start I had an accident in the first corner and lost my front wing and punctured my left tyre so I had to go into the pits."

Radio problems resulted in Adrian coming into the pits too early for his second stop. "The race was a bit messy from that point of view, but at least I could finish and collect some information for the next race", he added.

Mike Gascoyne added that although "we turned him around pretty quickly, he came out just in front of the pack, which meant he lost a lot of time with the blue flags.

"When he was on his own he was able to drive consistently and quickly and it is encouraging to see him get his first finish of the year."

So, all in all a promising race for the team, really proving the improvements the team has made over the winter, with Vijay Mallya summing up that he "was delighted with Giancarlo's race pace and proud to see a Force India again fighting with well-established and experienced teams and drivers."

Yes it was good to see KINGFISHER dominating the TV screen for such a long time today. I was sipping the beer at the time(Sm128)

As I said in an earlier post, only driving in the midfield will ensure TV coverage (sidelining being lapped twice as in Sutil's experience). This is what Force India has to ensure, i.e being able to drive in the midfield pack to get seen by viewers and maybe in a postion to pick up the odd point in lucky conditions. Then for next year and hopefully also at the second part of this season maybe this will be easier. I still expect Sutil to be driving a lot better. This year he is sort of a disappointment, I would have expected him to be challenging Giancarlo really hard..

Can someone slap Fisichella in the face???

He does well when there is no pressure but when the pressure is on he just crumbles....not WDC material

@blueson99... thats a bit unfair. I dont call keeping a mclaren at bay for 3 laps crumbling under pressure.
@gordons... Sutil seems to be having quite a bit of bad luck with his car. Early days yet in this season.

Fisi has just managed to do what Fernando Alonso never succeeded in doing in all of 2007 - that is to say keep Hamilton at bay for multiple laps. And Fernando Alonso is known WDC material...

Fisi by keeping Hammy at bay for over 3 lasp ensured that Kingfisher was splashed all over the TV screen. Owner Vijay Mallya must be a happy man

bluesun99: Fisico needs the support from his team and I think he had a very hard times at Renault and I don't think the support from Renault wasn't so good for him..

Fisi is very good and an asset for the Force India Team. He will make the difference from FIF1 being mediocre to being a team that can battle in midfield. Forget the car, yet again this year will be another join the dots... very difficult to get points unless the first 8 drop out. Just battle for glory in the midfield outside the points until season finishes. Hope I'm a bit wrong and Gascoyne proves he's the man.But at least we SEE the car in races. VEry important for sponsorships and fans.

Good results to Force, though i missed watching the race,,,hope to catch the re-run this week....as Fisi had stated earlier that in Europe Force would be strong, so hope they get in to the top 10s.
