Predictions Contest Returns

Who can see the future?
By Alianora La Canta
March 20 2009
It's that time of year again - Force India have packed up their cars and sent them Down Under and the Force Fans Predictions Competiton is ready to roll. For those of you who were around last year, the format will be very similar - predict the top 8, where the Force India drivers finish and a few other things each race and see how well your crystal ball works...

Like last year, there will be a prize for each of the top three finishers. This will be determined on points Wink The prizes will be revealed considerably closer to the time.

The Rules

The rules are largely similar to last year. However, feedback from last year's participants has led to a change in policy concerning multiple predictions. If you make two bets which are incompatible with one another. For example, you predict Adrian Sutil finishes 8th in the race finish list, but then predict Car 20 (his car) will finish 11th, the only prediction given first in the post will be valid.

The full rules are given below:

1. All picks must be submitted and will be only accepted as valid before qualifying begins for the GP. You can edit your picks up until 30 minutes before qualifying. Any predictions submitted after this will be invalid and you won’t be able to predict for that GP weekend. In cases of dispute, I will use the time Sportnetwork posted your message and compare it to the advertised start time of qualifying.

2. Your most recent prediction for each race within the time limit will be used. If you wish to change your prediction, I would prefer it if you edited the post containing your prediction, though adding a post to the end of the prediction thread will also be acceptable.

3. The things to be predicted are:

- Pole Position: 2 points
- Race Winner: 10
- 2nd: 8
- 3rd: 6
- 4th: 5
- 5th: 4
- 6th: 3
- 7th: 2
- 8th: 1
- Fastest Lap: 2 points.
- First Retirement: 1 (if there is a tie e.g. three cars take themselves out at the first corner, anyone predicting any of the drivers who tied for first retirement will receive the point).
- Correct finishing position (including DNF) of the Force India drivers: 2 points each for correct position, 1 point for each DNF.
- 1 bonus point for correctly predicting a points score for a specific Force India driver, and 1 extra bonus point for choosing the correct points-scoring position for that driver.

If you copy-and-paste the following template and put your predictions in it, it will make organising the predictions easier:

- Pole Position: 2 points
- Race Winner:
- 2nd:
- 3rd:
- 4th:
- 5th:
- 6th:
- 7th:
- 8th:
- Fastest Lap:
- First Retirement:
- Finishing Position of Car 20 (Adrian Sutil):
- Finishing Position of Car 21 (Giancarlo Fisichella):

4. All predictions above must be exactly correct. Should any driver pull out before the race weekend, his replacement is not automatically substituted in the predictions. You can edit your choice as per usual earlier than 30 minutes before qualifying.

5. The prize for the winner will be announced later in the season. The prize for everyone else will be enjoying competing with each other.

6. In the first instance, Alianora La Canta will adjudicate and organise. Should she appoint anyone to assist or to be the new predictions organiser, the assistant/predictions organiser may be consulted and this rule will be modified to confirm the identity(ies) of that person/people. His or her word should be interpreted as binding subject to any appeals to Alianora La Canta.

7. The qualifying and race results first published by formula1.com will be used to judge the predictions placed. Appeal to organiser's decision which is final.

8. Retirement means not finishing the race after the race has started. So any retirement resulting from not starting the race does not fall under this description. The retirement can be due to an accident, mechanical or judicial reason.

9. If contradictory predictions are given, only the first one in the post will be valid. Any subsequent contradictory predictions will automatically score zero points.

10. Any additional rules can be added to aid clarity but not to change the predictions format and the points as and when deemed necessary.

11. During the following week of each Grand Prix, all scores will be tallied and updates made to the competition standings. At the end of the 2008 season, 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters will be announced.

12. If there are any problems, please let Alianora La Canta know and she will try to help. Otherwise, enjoy yourself and good luck.

Sunset-Taker won last year, but with seemingly everything changing in F1, who knows who will win this time?

and what if a driver has a bad accident in qualifying and can not start the race?

Re: Predictions Contest Returns
Good question.

The most relevant rule says "Should any driver pull out before the race weekend, his replacement is not automatically substituted in the predictions."

This only states what happens if the pulling out occurs before the race weekend begins, not what happens during if it happens during such a weekend.

The rules (apart from rule 9) were the same last year, but the fact that the drivers who finished the season had all been there at the start meant this scenario was never tested. However it is entirely plausible that a qualifying accident could lead to a replacement.

If the replacement was done after qualifying, logic would suggest that the predictions are automatically modified accordingly. This is because the predictor could not possibly have changed the prediction in reaction to the event.

If the replacement (as opposed to the incident necessitating a replacement) happens before the cut-off point (i.e. 30 minutes before qualifying), then my initial thought is to not substitute automatically. However, this is not written down in stone at this time and I think the best thing would be to invite the rest of you to comment on how this situation should be handled.

Please could you all tell me whether you'd prefer automatic substitution in the case of a mid-race-weekend driver replacement or not, and if so, whether and when any cut-off should be.

Good point, Sunset!

I say replacement should be the rule.

Cheers,
SdL

Re: Predictions Contest Returns
why not simply take over of it?

I mean

I say whatever "Nixkönnen will be 8th" and he has then an accident.... the one that replaces him, IF he will be even replaced should automatically be taken as the original driver.

saves a lot of time - OR we need to do it the old way:
no names, just Car Numbers.. and then there is no modifying necessary at all.

Re: Predictions Contest Returns
In that case, any in-race-weekend replacement will result in automatic substitution. A pre-race-weekend replacement will not, but I will post an alert in this thread should that apply.

If I need to do this, I will mention it when I come to do that particular race's tallying. If I forget to mention it, feel free to yell at me until I actually do it.

Re: Predictions Contest Returns
Rule 4 has been modified to account for the agreed change and I have also taken the liberty of modifying the template because Force India has been upgraded from 20/21 to 18/19.

In addition, I will confirm that the Force India prediction is (still) done on car number (the driver is in brackets to indicate who is in which car, since that's easier to remember than car number).
