Bahrain Practise 1: Good Medium-Tyre Pace

F1's annual trip to the desert has particular interest for Force India supporters because Force India have brought their first package of improvements for the year with them. Featuring an interim double diffuser among other new parts, it seemed to have a beneficial effect in the practise.
9:00am - The session begins.

9:02am - Adrian is very relaxed about going out and as a result is the 11th to leave the pits. Evidently Force India believes it will have a lot of time to get through its programme this morning.

9:03am - Giancarlo is the 16th driver to leave the pits.

9:04am - Adrian returns to the pits. Nick Heidfeld has passed Giancarlo on track, which is unusual for an out-lap.

9:05am - Giancarlo returns to the pits.

9:12am - New parts - Adrian Sutil confirms that the new parts for the Force India include an interim double diffuser, reprofiled sidepods, front wing and "a few other bits". Grip, balance and downforce are all supposed to be improved.

9:44am - Adrian and Giancarlo go out on track. Most other drivers have already set times. Adrian told by Bradley Joyce that the medium tyres take a while to come in and to watch his brakes in the first few laps.

9:46am - Adrian is setting sector times of 30.6, 41.4, 23.8.

Giancarlo is currently 11th, 1.734 seconds behind Hamilton and Adrian 16th, 0.570 seconds further in arrears. Alonso and Heidfeld are behind Sutil, while neither Buemi nor Kubica have set times.

9:51am - Giancarlo sets a green sector 1 and Adrian a green sector 2, but neither improves their position.

9:52am - Giancarlo has set a green sector 1 and sector 2, while Adrian sets a time good enough for 9th.

9:53am - Giancarlo has set a time good enough for 9th. The Force Indias clearly like the medium tyres.

9:54am - Adrian has had some sort of incident in Sector 2 because he's lost two seconds there. Probably going wide at Turn 9, like at least half the grid has already done...

9:56am - Both Force Indias have pitted, having set some excellent times. The BBC commentry team thought Giancarlo had gone off track at Turn 9 and caused a yellow flag, until they checked their screens and noticed it hadn't been updated for 10 minutes.

10:06am - Giancarlo returns to the circuit. With the sector 1 time he's setting, he's probably on medium compound again.

10:08am - Giancarlo sets a green Sector 1 (30.3) but the second sector is nothing special (41.2) and a reasonable third sector (23.4). It works well for him though and he is 12th, 1.395 seconds off Hamilton's time and 0.194 seconds ahead of Sutil. Adrian remains in the pits, in 16th.

10:10am - Adrian sets out onto the track as Giancarlo pits. That was a short run, considering that a look at the car shows it is definitely on intermediates. Giancarlo and Adrian are third and fourth in the speed trap classification.

10:12am - An on-board lap with Adrian. He looks fast even though the car is twitching. He went wide into Turn 9, but kept it on the track. However, this time does not constitute an improvement.

10:16am - Adrian is still circulating,  trying to get the medium tyres to warm up.

10:19am - Adrian has pitted.

10:23am - Giancarlo returns to the circuit.

10:24am - Adrian has joined the track as well, in common with most of the field. Sebastien Buemi may have caused a yellow flag because his car has just stopped at the side of the track.

10:26am - Yellow flags have been taken away. The Force India times are nothing special right now and Giancarlo and Adrian are 13th and 16th.

10:28am - Where did that come from? Adrian got 13th, 1.374 seconds slower than Hamilton and 0.021 seconds faster than Giancarlo.

10:29am - Giancarlo has pitted.

10:30am - Adrian's final lap leaves him 14th. Giancarlo finishes the session 16th.I don't think Force India used soft tyres at any point, but their medium-compound tyre pace was impressive.

Sutil overcooked turns 9 and 10 more times than what I could count! heheh!

He was having impressive sector 1 times but probably riding the car too hard. Let's see what both can do later on!

Cheers,
SdL

It's nice to see they as others are just focussing on the harder tyre pace knowing that is where the big gains are to be had in the race. As yet I have only seen small pictures, so haven't been able to spot the differences.
