Bahrain Practise 2: Looking Good
By Alianora La Canta
April 24 2009
Having secured 14th and 16th in first practise, the Force India team set out to find some more pace. The order appears to have been shaken up somewhat in the light of the diffuser decision and the scramble to get development parts on the cars, even more so this afternoon.
12:52pm - The wind has seriously picked up from this morning. This will be an excellent test of aero capability.

11:59am - Ian Phillips comments that with 7-8 laps needed to warm up the medium tyres, conclusions were difficult to reach.

1:00pm - Adrian is the fifth car on track, as Maurice Hamilton from BBC suggests that the Force India factory staff should have a bonus for getting the interim diffuser out before almost anyone else.

Meanwhile, a shot of Giancarlo's half of the garage shows that he is out of the car and probably not going out again for a while.

1:03pm - Adrian is 5th, but has set a purple Sector 1 on the next lap. Sector 2 is really slow due to falling off the track at Turn 10, which is a pity since the third sector is also purple. As a result of the latter, he improves to 4th.

1:07pm - Adrian has pitted.

1:10pm - Giancarlo has joined the circuit, the last driver to do so.

1:11pm - Sector 1 (30.6), Sector 2 (41.3) and Sector 3 (23.4) - Giancarlo's gone fastest overall!

1:14pm - Understeer meant that Giancarlo didn't improve his time, but he did set a 30.3 sector 1.

1:15pm - Giancarlo's pitted. He's still P1.

1:18pm - Adrian has left the pits.

1:21pm - Adrian had a minor off at the first turn. He's currently 18th, but to be fair he is also on medium-compound tyres.

1:24pm - Adrian's times are picking up, with a 30.3 first sector. It turns into an all-green 1:34.690 and obtained 4th place. He is 0.903 seconds behind Glock and 0.653 seconds ahead of Giancarlo.

1:28pm - Adrian has pitted.

1:29pm - Adrian has the fastest speed trap recorded as Ian Phillips admits that the Force India engine is usually "over-cooled".

1:32pm - Giancarlo is on track.

1:33pm - Giancarlo's first sector is a 30.5 - a time suggesting that these are the same sort of tyres he had on last time.

1:34pm - Adrian joins the circuit. Giancarlo's time is good enough for 9th, but is still 1.644 seconds slower than Jarno Trulli and 0.653 seconds slower than Adrian.

1:39pm - Giancarlo has pitted. Adrian is still on track, but the times are not exactly thrilling.

1:40pm - Adrian has pitted, as Ian Phillips says that Force India will be fitting fresh engines to both cars tomorrow. Adrian is currently 6th and Giancarlo is currently 13th.

1:53pm - Both Force Indias are on track and Adrian has set a purple Sector 1 on super-soft tyres. Then he sets green Sectors 2 and 3 to become 4th. Only 0.151 seconds off Trulli and 1.676 seconds ahead of Giancarlo.

1:57pm - Adrian has pitted. Giancarlo is still on track.

2:10pm - Adrian has returned to the track.

2:12pm - Giancarlo has pitted. He is currently 0.965 seconds slower than Rosberg and 0.537 seconds slower than Adrian.

2:17pm - Adrian is setting steady times. It turns out that Force India has a load of other new bits (over and above the ones already on the car) that are stuck at customs...

2:19pm - Giancarlo joins the track. At this point he is 12th and Adrian is 8th.

2:23pm - Both Force Indias have pitted. I'm not sure Giancarlo set a time on that last run.

2:27pm - Both Force Indias return to track for the usual qualifying practise.

2:30pm - Adrian gets seventh on his final lap (0.424 seconds off Rosberg) while Giancarlo takes 11th (quickly demoted to 12th), 0.262 seconds behind Adrian. It's a good showing from Force India - these new bits clearly work. Just wait until the bits in customs get put in...
