Spain Practise 1 - Settling In Quietly

The F1 circus returns to Europe. Force India have a few updates, including an adjustable front wing. The racing could be a little less processional than last year thanks to the ban on in-season testing, but the consequence of this is that Friday suddenly becomes much more important. What will Force India make of it?

9:00am - Adrian Sutil, fourth car out of the garage, starts the weekend with a practise start.

9:03am - Adrian has pitted. Giacarlo has emerged from the pitlane (with only Hamilton, Barrichello and the Ferraris yet to come out).

9:06am - Giancarlo has pitted.

09:11am - Force India have started tweeting practise sessions.

09:15am - Giancarlo has returned to the track. A shot of the Force India garage shows Adrian standing at the back of the garage, evidentlyot going out any time soon.

09:16am - Giancarlo has returned to the pits. This is because he went very wide in Turn 10 and chose not to try warming up the hard tyres again.

09:39am - Adrian heads onto the track.

09:42am - Giancarlo joins the track as Adrian starts a quick lap. Sector 1 - 23.6. Sector 2 - 32.1. Sector 3 - 29.4. Total time 1:25.228. Good for 12th, slotting in between Hamilton and Piquet Jr. 2.106 seconds behind Rosberg though.

09:46am - Giancarlo sets a time good enough for 16th. Moments later, Adrian raises the bar by setting the 9th-fastest time, 1.363 seconds behind Massa.

09:47am - Giancarlo improves his time to go 15th.

09:48am - Adrian goes 8th (0.952 seconds off Massa's time) while Giancarlo takes 12th (a further 0.347 seconds in arrears).

09:50am - Adrian went off at Turn 1. He decided to pit rather than continue the run. Giancarlo improved to take 7th. He'd done seven laps up to this point without graining.

09:51am - Giancarlo has improved even more and is now 6th, only 0.624 seconds behind Massa. These Force Indias clearly like the hard tyres.

09:53am - Giancarlo has returned to the pits, having done seven laps.

10:03am - Giancarlo has started his fourth run. Once again, he is on hard tyres.

10:05am - Adrian has joined the circuit for his third run. Meanwhile, Giancarlo puts in a 22.8 green Sector 1.

10:08am - Giancarlo got 10th fastest time, keeping good pace with Webber's Red Bull round the last sector of the lap in the process.

10:09am - Giancarlo takes 9th fastest time. Adrian's times are currently a few tenths off, possibly indicating the end of the initial phase of speed from the hard tyres.

10:10am - Giancarlo has pitted. The speed patterns indicate graining, which after five laps of this run and seven laps of the previous one is less than surprising.

10:13am - Adrian has pitted.

10:16am - Giancarlo has started his fifth run. He's still on the grainy hard tyres he's used for the majority of the session.

10:19am - Adrian has started his fourth run, also on grained hard tyres. Clearly this is not a session where Force India consider the times to be important.

10:22am - Adrian has set a green Sector 3.

10:28am - Adrian has pitted, just after Mak Webber makes quite the performance of trying to pass him. The Red Bull driver ends up taking to the dusty run-off area to effect the move.

10:30am - Session over. Giancarlo got P16, 1.290 seconds behind Button and Adrian P20, a further 0.447 seconds behind. Between them are Alonso, Buemi and Kovalainen. It is worth noting that Force India were primarily chasing set-up and grip and not really going for times. For example, they've not used any soft tyres yet.

FP2 has been close to real performance of teams this year, as teams are utilising FP1 more on testing setups etc., in view of testing ban.
