European Grand Prix: MF1O preview

Once more Midland F1 Racing take to the competitive race track after completing an encouraging test programme. Last week at Silverstone the team introduced yet more improvements in the separate race to find more pace from the M16 chassis.

The Nurburgring held it’s first Formula One race in October 1984, which was won by Alain Prost in a McLaren. Over the late 80’s and 90’s the track fell silent due to commercial disputes, but in 1995 the circus was back encouraged on by the success of local (OK, 40 miles way) boy Michael Schumacher. The circuit under went some changes in 2002 to create a stadium section around the first corner.

Midland F1 Technical Director James Key has spoken exclusively with the official Midland F1 website and had this to say about this circuit.

“It is a real mish-mash”, he has been quoted as saying. “The slow section after the start has changed the level of downforce a bit compared with the past, while braking into Turn 1 is pretty fundamental, as well. It's a good passing place, and a lot of time can be lost or gained there. And you've also got the chicane at the end of the lap. So there are quite a few bits and pieces that are quite unique, but you could equally consider it as what we'd term a 'normal circuit', as well. Downforce levels are similar to what you might run in Barcelona, for example, although the tyre choice is probably softer than there."

We understand that the team had a productive test at Silverstone last week, and worked on a number of developments including suspension components and start procedures. We also noticed on the Silverstone test press releases that the engine model number has changed from previous press releases suggesting that the much talked about engine upgrade has now happened.

Like San Marino, we’re hoping to see good pace from the M16 at the Nurgurgring and hoping that that good pace can be repeated in the qualifying sessions. Again, it would be a real step forward to see one of those cars in the top 16 and see it there on pure merit. Race wise, our hope is that both cars make it round the first lap unscathed, and finish the race. The changeable weather for which this circuit is famed is likely to play a role in the race, and mixed weather conditions could play to the team’s advantage.

As ever we wish the team well, and will be watching and supporting them no matter what happens.
