Lewis Hamilton topped the time sheets in a variable conditioned session 1 for the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. The championship leader held on at top of the time sheets for most of the 90 minute session and the closest threat to him was double race winner Kimi Raikkonen 0.236 seconds away in 2nd with Fernando Alonso running behind in 3rd.

Nick Heidfeld took 4th place at his home grand prix beating his team mate Robert Kubica in 5th. Suprisingly Felipe Massa ran to a  lowly 6th place a victim of running wide at turn one on his final run.

Ralf Schumacher had a strong run to 7th while Button had an encouraging run for Honda in 8th. Coulthard got stuck in a earthy Honda sandwich in 9th with Barrichello 10th. Trulli failed to beat his team mate floating around in 11th with Williams looking for a better weekend with Wurz 12th and Rosberg 13th.

Anthony Davidson was the first of the Super Aguris in 14th working on balance and concentrating on long runs.  Mark Webber ended the 90 minute session in 15th and Takuma Sato ran to 16th place for Super Aguri after a mixed morning session.

Tonio Liuzzi  is looking for more luck he ended the day in 17th with the Renaults of Hekki Kovalienen in 18th and Giancarlo Fisichella in 19th struggling for pace. Scott Speed took 20th with Adrian Sutil 21st outpacing his new team mate. Marcus  Winkelhock came to grips with a race weekend in 22nd spinning along the way.
