An Overview of iSport International

iSport Garage
By Shelley White June 27 2008
A rundown of iSport International which was formed in 2004 to compete in the newly formed GP2 Series. Since then they've become highly successful, Team and Drivers Champions in 2007, with an impressive array of former drivers and strong links to Formula 1 teams.

Team Principal: Paul Jackson
Driver Car 1: Karun Chandock
Driver Car 2: Bruno Senna

History: The team from Norwich was founded in 2004 to launch an attack on the new GP2 series by Paul Jackson, Gavin Bickerton-Jones, Richard Selwin and Charles Cooley. The team has considerable experience in motor sport, with many members being part of the successful Petrobras F3000 team. Jonathan Williams, son of F1 team runner Frank, is also an advisor to the team whilst scouting young talents.

In the initial GP2 season in 2005 iSport fielded 2 cars driven by the promising American Scott Speed and Turish driver Can Artam, they finished 3rd and 22nd in the drivers ladder respectively, while iSport claimed 4th spot to bring to an end a promising first season.

While Scott Speed was promoted to Formula 1 with Scuderia Toro Rosso for the next season, the team granted Ernesto Viso and Tristan Gommendy the drivers seat for the 2006 GP2 season. Tristan was switched mid season for Timo Glock who had been driving for the BCN Competicion team. iSport finished the season with not only their first GP2 win, but 4 overall split equally between Ernesto who finished the season 6th and Timo who came in 4th with the team in 3rd.

Timo retained his seat for the 2007 season and previous race winner Andreas Zuber was promoted to the sister car. Timo was in fierce competition with Lucas Di Grassi for the title and eventually succeeded. With 5 wins to his name Timo took the Drivers title in 2007, and coupled with Andreas' solid season finishing 9th, the team was able to clinch the Team title for the first time.

2008: iSport International began the 2008 series as reigning drivers and team champions, they are considered by most as the team to beat. Timo was hired alongside Jarno Trulli for the Toyota F1 team, and in his place race winners Karun Chandock and Bruno Senna, nephew of the great Ayrton, took the seats. They hope to emulate the success of seasons past and take away both titles at the end of the season.

Paul Jackson: The competition seems to get tougher all the time and 2008 looks like it will be one of the most competitive yet. With so many strong drivers and the teams improving all the time, I don't really see too many weak combinations on the grid, so I think we are in for a vintage year.

Bruno Senna: “I'm really looking forward to the 2008 GP2Series, because I believe this is the year when I'll have my best opportunity to achieve great results. Together with iSport we have been working hard to start the season on a high note and keep doing a good job throughout the year.”

Karun Chandock: "I’m really looking forward to the European season this year. I’m very fortunate to be working with iSport this season.Doing the GP2 Asia Series together means that we've already established a good relationship. It’s going to be an exciting season and I can count at least 14 drivers capable of running at the front!!"
