With rains earlier in the weekend having washed out qualifying, the starting grid was set by drivers' championship oints standings comming into the day. This put Helio Castroneves on pole and Scott Dixon along side on the front row. For the first half ofthe race Helio ran away and hid from the rest of the field: Dixon did much the same for most of the second half.
Timming and luck would not be on their side at the end, however. A yellow flag - for Roger Yasakawa's sized-up right front wheel - with just over 50 laps to go saw the entire field pit for fresh Firestones and a tank-full of ethanol. Fearing that the remaining distance would be too much if the race stayed green for the rest of the way, Helio, Ed Carpenter and Danica Patrick came in again just before the caution was lifted to top off their fuel tanks.
When the green came back out, everyone else stood on the throttle and went racing at full tilt, but Danica held back and worked on maximizing her fuel usage. With less than ten laps to go & no further caution periods having materialized, the rest of the field began to cycle through pit lane once again for a quick splash of ethanol to carry them to the end.
As they dropped off, Helio, Ed & Danica moved forward. Soon Carpenter's & Castroneves' gamble also came up short, leaving Patrick in the lead with barely three laps to go. She cruised home to her first IndyCar victory from there.
"It's a long time coming. Finally," Patrick said. "It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it perfectly for me. I knew I was on the same strategy as Helio and when I passed him for the lead, I couldn't believe it. This is fabulous."

What a relief for open-wheel in the States, merger, Rahal winning, Danica winning.
Nascar has to worry a bit.
