Power Dominates Last CCWS Event
By Andrew Cutler April 21 2008
The Champ Car World Series is now officially history. The last event, the 34th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, was run yesterday with a field of now-"obsolete" Panoz DP01s, 1/2 of which were owned by teams & manned by drivers who did not join the IndyCar Series in the recent merger.

The day was dominated by one team and driver who did make the switch; Will Power of KV Racing Technology. Vaulting from fourth into the lead after an F1-style standing start, Power held off the polesitter, NHL's Justin Wilson, for 12 laps. After Wilson was forced to retire with mechanical issues, Power was basically unchallenged throughout the rest of the race.

"I got a very good start in the KVRT Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia car, which I knew was really important," Power said. "The KVRT team did a great job with the car. I was very fast in the race, good fuel saving, great pit stops. I am very happy for (team co-owner) Kevin Kalkhoven and Craig Gore and all the KVRT team. They have put in so much work over the last couple of months, having been away from their families, it's great to give them a win because they are the ones who deserve it."

As per the detials of the IRL/CCWS merger, the race paid full points towards the 2008 IndyCar season championship for the finishers. Power earned 53 points; 50 for the win & 3 for leading the most laps. "One-off" drivers Franck Montagny (Forsythe/Pettit Racing) & Mario Dominguez (PCM) finished second & third, respectively.
