It comes as no particular suprise that the cars of Target Chip Ganassi Racing, traditionally one of the series' top squads, will fill the front row, with Scott Dixon on pole and Dan Wheldon along side. "Obviously, we're happy starting 1-2 and want to keep it that was at the end of the race.", Dixon said afterwards.
It's also not suprising that Danica Partick is riding the wave of momentum from her 1st IndyCar win last week at Motegi by claiming the 3rd grid spot. "We arrived here with a good Motorola car," said Patrick, who recorded her first series pole start at Kansas Speedway as a rookie in 2005. "We had a good first run and the car is really well-balanced. Hopefully, we can get out in front of the red and white cars."
What really suprised people where the drivers who will fill the next four grid spots. Tomas Scheckter, for whom Kansas is one of only three races this year, put his Luczo-Dragon car in fourth. The third row will be the domain of the Vision racing duo of AJ Foyt IV & Ed Carpenter, who are continuing to show consistantly strong form over the early part of the season. The biggest suprise, however, came from owner/driver Marty Roth, normally a backmarker, who put togeather a qualifying run good enough to start in seventh.
Unfortunately, the drivers of the former CCWS teams continued to struggle to get a handle on oval driving, and their best effort came from EJ Viso, who qualified back in 17th spot.
Here is the starting grid for Sunday's race, which begins at 5pm EST, 9pm GMT:
