After a quick yellow for a first lap incident, teammates Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon drove off and left the rest of the field behind. Thus it would remain for the first 3/4 of the race - save for Ed Carpenter, who just barely kept his Vision Racing car in touch with the duo.
A late one-car wreck, as Buddy Rice's car suffered a suspension failure, would catch both Ganassi driver's short on fuel, and the last round of pit stops would allow the rest of the field to catch back up. When it was time to go green again, Wheldon had inherited the lead and Dixon found himself back in 7th spot. Charging through the field, Dixon would climb back to 3rd, but could not catch his teammate or AGR's Tony Kanaan, who finished 2nd.
This was Wheldon's 14th series victory, and his first since last year's Kansas race. "It has been a little frustrating at times and to get the (No.) 10 car back to Victory Lane just shows that we could be back and we certainly mean a lot of business," said Wheldon. "It was a real strong day."
The steep learing curve continued for the drivers of the former CCWS squads, most of whom had no oval racing experince prior to this year. E.J. Viso looked particularly impressive, vaulting from 17th starting spot up to 9th before he touched wheel with Tomas Scheckter, putting Tomas out and compromising the rest of his own race. In the end it was Justin Wilson of the NHL squad who posted the best finish among this group, one lap back in 9th.

Earlier in the day the Firestone Indy Lights Series held a 100 mile race, which was won by rookie J.R. Hilebrand; his first win in the series.
