Opening Day - Complete With Pics

Sunday was the start of practice for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500, which will be run on May 25. As per the usual Indy tradition, the rookies - a group that, thanks to the merger, totals 13 drivers this year - get the track to themselves for the first two days.

Each will have to undergo a four-stage "Rookie Test", proving that they can handle themselves in the car at ever-increasing speed increments; 200-205 mph, 205-210, 210-215 & 215+ before they will be cleared to participate in open (meaning no "speed limit") practice & qualifications. Ten drivers completed the entire test on Sunday, while another driver got 3/4 of the way through.

By the end of the day three drivers - Will Power, E.J. Viso & Oriol Servia - were putting down laps at over 220mph.
