2005 Indy Lights champion Wade Cunningham started on the poll, with the AFS/Andretti-Green duo of Sebastian Saavedra & J.R. Hildebrand and his Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammate Ana Beatriz all near the front of the grid, ready to challenge him.
Cunningham and the AFS/AGR duo swapped the lead numerous times throughout the race, with RLR/Andersen driver Mario Romancini making an impressive climb from mid-pack to join in the battle.
Others were not so lucky. The Panther Racing duo of Martin Plowman and Pippa Mann collected each other in one wreck, while Ana Beatriz and Gustavo Yacaman would take each other out in another.
In the end, it was the Kiwi holding off Hildebrand and Romancini to capture his second Freedom 100 victory; the first came in 2006. "That was 100 percent every lap," he said afterwards. "That last lap and a lap I was yelling at my car to keep going like a jockey on his horse. The whole race was to and fro. I got to the front early and knew I couldn't lead all 40 laps, so I fell back because I didn't want to be leading at the end. I knew I had a fast car, and it was a matter of being at the right place at the right time."
