Polesitter Justin Wilson lead the early going, but would surrender the lead for the middle half of the event as differing fuel and tire strategies played out up and down pit lane. By lap 57 (of 85), however, the Englishman was back at the point and looked to be untouchable.
Then yet another crash-induced yellow flag bunched the field. Comming to the restart, Wilson lost the rear-end grip on his car, which allowed 2nd place Will Power to slip by. Pushing hard to catch and repass him, Wilson spun his car completely around as he tried to negotiate Turn 8. “We had the pace,” Wilson said. “I got sideways through Turn 7, got on the brakes, locked the rears and just couldn’t get them unlocked in time for the corner. I felt like I had a left rear puncture, but the guys came on the radio after and said the car was OK.”
But the damage to his race was done. Wilson could only sit and watch as most of the field drove by while he waited for an opening to get going in the right direction again.
