Felipe joined Ferrari in 2006 and though showed his brilliance initially, was mostly under the shadows of Michael Schumacher. He was left playing an anchor's role to the German, who, in his last year at Ferrari, was fighting for the championship with Fernando Alonso (driving the Renault).
With Michael gone, Ferrari hired the services of the Iceman, Kimi Raikkonen in 2007, possibly to fill the vacuum left by the legendary German. Felipe however again matched his team-mate initially, only to be pulled down by unreliability of the car that saw his chances slip away from the championship.
He later again played a supporting role, this time to Kimi in the final GP at his home, giving up his lead to the Finn, who went on to win the championship.
Come 2008 and Felipe displayed the best of his form, by completely overshadowing his champion team mate, only to be victim of poor Ferrari pit tactics (like, Singapore etc.,) that saw him lose valuable points in a few races.
He, though continued and took the fight for championship with Lewis Hamilton to the last GP of the season at Brazil. In wet conditions, Felipe crossed the line first, only to be denied the championship when Lewis overtook the struggling Toyoto of Timo Glock, at the final corner, to come 5th, and snatching the championship by a single point.
2009 saw Ferrari struggling to keep pace with new entrants Brawn GP, and in Hungary, Felipe had a near fatal accident when a loose spring from Rubens Barrichello's car hit him at great speed. His helmet saved him, but the injury of the impact took time to heal, and he was out of the competition for the rest of the season.
The current season saw Felipe having the best of his starts so far in his career, but he has been completely over-shadowed by his team-mate in almost every qualifying and race.
Before the German GP Alonso was 47 points behind the current leader Lewis Hamilton, while Felipe further 30 odd points behind him.
The team, hence, must have believed that backing Alonso would be worth a try for the world championship than Felipe, thus the decision to switch positions in the German GP.
Would Felipe raise his game and convince Ferrari that he still has the fire to challenge for yet another championship?
Would we see the Felipe of 2008, who blitzed through the qualifying and races, and almost winning the championship?
We all hope so, and we hope Felipe channelise the current happenings in a positive manner and come up more stronger and better by the next season.
We saw glimpses of his old form already in the last GP and wish him all the best for this weekend.
