Nick Heidfeld, at the age of 26, is Jordan’s ideal combination of youth and experience, with four years of Fl under his belt during which time he regularly outdid the performances of impressive teammates: Jean Alesi, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

The German from began karting at the age of 11 and followed a textbook career through kart championships, Formula Ford winning 8 of 9 races in his first year of car racing and Formula 3, winning three races in his first season and the championship the following year.

In Formula 3000 he came close to winning the title in his first season, and did a dominant job of securing it at the second attempt, while at the same time carrying out duties as an official McLaren Fl test driver from 1997 to 1999. His Fl debut was with Prost, following which he drove for Sauber for three years, remarkable for his consistent speed and assertive rececraft, alongside occasionally unpredictable teammates. His best result in Fl so far is a podium place when he came 3rd in the 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix, a race of attrition which demanded a determined drive to stay at the front of the field to bring in the result.

Jordan Ford engineers were convinced by Heidfeld s thorough and dynamic work in pre-season testing and are hoping that he will have the chance to shine on the racetrack, spearheading the team’s fightback in 2004.

“Early tests with the EJI4 have been promising as it’s been a reliable car and I think with any luck we will just keep improving and improving it all year. It’s not going to be easy and we won’t make huge steps all at once. But we have a good base and little by little I’m confident we will move forward, score points and keep the competition behind us. I am fully motivated and determined to prove myself.”
