Despite starting third on the grid, Kimi Räikkönen's chances of winning the 2007 World Championship were slim. He would need to take the Brazilian race victory and have Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton finish lower than 2nd and 5th respectively. Which is exactly what happened.
Kimi had a great start to move up to second in the first corner, while Hamilton fell from 2nd to 4th behind Alonso. Lewis would fall even further back, as some tricky blocking from Fernando forced him to go wide. He was now in 8th place, but still certainly in contention. This would all change when a transmission problem, forced Hamilton all the way back to 18th. Still, he was not out of the race.
The race would continue like this for quite sometime, with Massa leading from Räikköneng and Alonso and Hamilton storming his way up from the back of the grid.
Now it was a question of when (not if) Ferrari would move Massa out of Räikkönen way to take the victory. This would come during the second round of pit stops, with Kimi taking the fastest laps of the race to create an extremely thin margin between himself and his team mate.
Now all that would need to happen was for Alonso to stay in third and Hamilton to not recover to 5th place. There was no chance of Fernando passing Massa as the Spaniard did not look to challenge all day and drove a rather unimpressive race. So it was all down to Lewis Hamilton, could he recover to fifth?
Unfortunately for the British rookie, he could only manage a 7th place finish, despite a very strong charge from the back of the grid.
This meant that Kimi Räikkönen would win the Brazilian Grand Prix and the 2007 Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship. The top three were only separated by 1 point, with Hamilton claiming the second spot behind Räikkönen by virtue of better finishes than team mate Alonso.
It was certainly a surprise for Räikkönen to win the title, as it looked almost certain that Lewis Hamilton would become the first driver ever to win the Championship in his rookie year. However, a shocking turn of events meant that Lewis could not take would looked certain to be his title. Despite not winning the Championship, it is clear that Lewis Hamilton was the story of the season. Shocking everyone in the Formula 1 world with his extremely impressive debut season, Hamilton will certainly be one of the dominating forces of years to come. Today though belongs to Kimi Räikkönen and the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro team. World Champions both. Though the Constructors' Title may have been won under rather unfortunate circumstances, but at the Brazilian Grand Prix, it was all Ferrari dominance and Räikkönen brilliance. It was an exciting, controversial and fantastic season and all of the top drivers deserve to be congratulated. Without them, we would not have bore witness to one of the best seasons in recent history. Though the greatest amount of praise goes to Kimi Räikkönen, who despite countless setbacks over the years at McLaren, kept his head cool and through raw determination and sheer speed, finally took the World Championship title he so greatly deserves.
Congratulations Ferrari and Kimi Räikkönen, 2007 Formula 1 World Champions!
