Peel Signs for Sale

Peel Signs for Sale
By Andrew Collins January 15 2008
In a shock move Llanelli Scarlets scrum half Dwaine Peel has signed a two year contract with English side, Sale. The Strady Park favourite moves just a week after new Welsh coach Warren Gatland announced his plans to keep Welsh players in the province.

The Welsh first choice scrum half says his decision to leave was based on furthering his life experience,

"The deal to stay at Llanelli was similar to that offered by Sale - it's about the fact that, not having lived outside Wales, I'd like to experience life in another country for a short period."

If Gatland is to stick to his new regime of not selecting players who choose to move away from Wales, it leaves the number 9 shirt free for former Cardiff Blue, Mike Phillips. However, his move to the Ospreys hasn't quite worked out, he's been playing very much second fiddle to Justin Marshall, so the pressure is on Gatland already to show if he'll stick to his word.

Peel was a suggested target for Dai Young, but it's not known whether the Blues had offered him a deal.

Peel has been named in Gatland's first Welsh squad

Brilliant!!!! so who is the foreign scrum Half we are linked with. To much to hope for Byron Kelleher or Ricky January or is it. If it is Kelleher what' the chances of Dan Carter coming as well

We're not trying to sign a scrum half for next season. We signed two last summer who are both on two year contracts.

We've also signed Sweeney for next season so we wont be getting a foreign outside half either

And one of those Scrum halfs will be the 2nd best Scrum half playing in Wales next season. Sweeney is good cover for Nicky.

Jonny any new ideas on which nWq is off??

Hes having a shoulder reconstruction which means he will not be playing for 6 months, there will be no point in signing him in front of Allinson or Evans plus he has played at full back all season for Sale

Haven't you read the stream about Ben Blair and Jason Spice leaving at the end of the season.

This is taken from the article at the top of the stream There are also rumours linking scrum half Jason Spice with a move back to his homeland. Having been released by the Ospreys in the summer, Spice was thrown a Welsh rugby lifeline with Cardiff, desperate to land a scrum half following the loss of Mike Phillips. However he was only offered a one year deal, and it's thought the Blues are lining up a big name foreign scrum half for next season.

To throw another Kiwi name into the melting pot Tiri Weepu is apparently out of contract in the summer.

He could be talking to me. I think the same as you have written though. Blair rumour seems to have been cleared up a little too.

I have read the article and I think it's a load of crap.

Firstly, Spice wasn't thrown a lifeline by Cardiff, he had agreed terms with Bath but the Blues came in for him at the last minute.

Secondly, Spice signed for 2 years not 1

Thirdly, Spice was signed with a view of being no.2 to Mike Phillips at the Blues. It wasn't until after Spice had signed for the Blues that Philips signed for the O's

Finally, The Blues aren't lining up a big name foreign scrum half for next season

I hope your right boys re Blair. As for Spice perhaps a change of backs coach for next season will speed up the delivery back from the rucks. He has made the Scrum Half spot his own now and apart from that one weakness in his game is doing a pretty good job.

Thinking about it speed of ball back from the rucks and mauls has been a weakness going back to when Howley played for us. The pack he played behind weren't exactly the fastest at releasing the ball either.

Well I said it would be between Stcherbina and Blair, but Blair has resigned so it looks like it could be Stcherbina.
Having said that, Filise is yet to sign.

I'm still hoping they can sort something out with the WRU. If all 7 players are contracted, what can the WRU do? Compensate the player who is released, out of their own pocket? I very much doubt they would do that. A fine to the Blues would be more likely.

We need Filise We have no other tighthead worthy of the name.

The NWQ limit is a gentlemen's agreement. There is nothing, legal, the WRU could do.

I agree we do need Filise. If he continues with the improvement he has made since his first season, we'll have an outstanding tight head on our hands come this time next year.

I have heard that the nWq ruling is a gentlemen's agreement, mainly from posters on this site, which doesn't say much about in the truth in them! I have also heard, from a reliable sauce, that the ruling was part of a signed agreement between the regions and the WRU. I do however, hope that I have got the information given to me, completely wrong!

If it was a signed agreement it would be against the EU free trade laws wouldnt it? Its why its not going to happen legally in football. Would the same apply?

So we could be paying Stitch off? Whens Horsmans contract up, because surely the only way we are going to let Filise go is if we sign someone like him. Molitika signed a two year deal, but the talk is that Daf Jones could be on his way down the M4 to us. So maybe it will be him off after all. Baffling!
