Brew and Mustoe Set to Sign

Brew and Mustoe Set
By Andrew Collins April 28 2008
Ospreys wing pair, Aled Brew and Richard Mustoe are set to sign for the Cardiff Blues. The 21 and 26 years olds will help bolster Dai Young’s options at wing and full back, while Tal Selley and Marc Stcherbina look set to join the Dragons.

Brew arrives from the Ospreys with just 3 tries for the Ospreys in 22 appearances this season, while Mustoe, who is on loan at the Dragons, has similar stats, 3 in 19 at Rodney Parade.

The pair will join Magner's Top Try Scorer, Tom James, injury returnees Chris Czekaj and Rhys Williams and winger cum full back Jamie Roberts in fighting for a first team spot.

While Mustoe, 26, is a relatively weak acquisition, it is the signing of Brew who should please some fans. The 3 times Welsh capped speedster still has a good future ahead of him, and should bring the best out of fellow youngsters, James, Czekaj and Roberts. Brew scored a very well taken try last week against the Dragons having replaced Shane Williams.

In other yet-to-be-confirmed transfer news, Marc Stcherbina and Tal Selley look likely to follow Duane Goodfield in joining the Dragons this summer. Selley's move, once completed, will make him the first player to represent all 4 of the newly formed Welsh regions. Selley came through the ranks at Llanelli Scarlets before moving to the Liberty Stadium, before joining Cardiff on a season loan from the Ospreys.

While Selley always looked set to leave, the news that fan favourite ‘Stitch' will be leaving the Arms Park will upset many. The Australian centre had 2 great seasons with the Blues, but after a season out with injury, his contract is being mutually terminated to allow the move to go ahead.

The main reason for the transfer is the extremely annoying Non Welsh Qualified (nWq) quota issued by the WRU. The limit is being reduced from 7 to 6 for next year, and in order to comply to the gentleman's agreement, the influential 12 will now be featuring at Cardiff's oldest rivals.

When confirmed, Mustoe and Brew will become the 2nd and 3rd new recruits for next season, joining Ceri Sweeney who was announced last week. Fans are still holding out for one or two impact signings, but time is running out.

One of the NWQs has to go (as things stand). Sweeney covers Stich's position even if he is not fit to tie his boot laces. These two must be PT's "big" signings!

I don't know if its just me but I've actually been impressed with Mustoe this season and when he played for the Ospreys, more so than brew.I think he could suprise a few people!

It's Brew who I think is a weak aquisition. I hope he proves me wrong, but he's been nothing but mediocre this season. He scored a try against a poor Dragons outfit that resulted from a forward pass and ironically against Mustoe who slipped and apparently it was a very well taken try. Apart from that what else can you say he's done this season? After last season with the Dragons I thought he would push further forward, but he's just been one big disappointment. Also he had his chance with the Opsreys to stake a serious claim for first team rugby at the beginning of the season when Walker and Shane were on world cup duty, yet failed to take it. After that when one of those were injured Vaughton would be selected ahead of him. Remember when he played against us early in the season? He was rubbish!

If this brew and mustoe thing is true i'm afraid it's not going to put 'bums on seats' next season.
THE BOARD CANNOT SEE BY SHELVING OUT FOR A WORLD CLASS PLAYER HE WILL MORE THAN PAY FOR HIMSELF IN ENDORSMENTS, ATTENDANCES ,ETC !!!!!!!!!! f****** GET RID OF THE LOT OF THEM, STARTING WITH NORSTER. (Sm110)

What is the point of signing two wingers when we already have Tom James and Jamie Roberts not to mention Rhys Williams and Alfie.

This is a bad joke right? Brew and Mustoe? Would be very galling to see Schterbina go after his solid performances this year,

Can't we just stick two fingers up to the nWq rule?
surely the WRU understand that the O's have a monopoly on such talent and its not in the regions interests for such a rule to exist?

Other teams cast offs!
Czekaj and RW will prob be back again next season, which means we'll have six wingers if these 2 sign.
Would be better to save on the wage bill and invest in someone decent in other positions where needed

I quite like Brew, but don't rate Mustoe at 26!

Amstal, how do you know about Stitch? That would be great news if he stays, but is someone else going to make way instead?

I hope Stitch doesnt leave this summer, It seems to me when Jamie Robinson or Shanks partner him in midfield they seem to play well, The partnership between Alfie and Shanks or Robinson doesnt seem to work aswell. I Can see why they are interested in Brew as cover for Jamie Roberts as I Think they will want to devolp him as in his usual role as full back and fight for the postion with Ben Blair maybe. Mustoe im maybe not to sure on well there again its harsh to dismiss him when he has played in such a poor dragons squad. any suggestions?

I hope Stich stays. BUT, if we adhere to the NWQ agreement who goes?

Our only acceptable tight head?

Our best SH?

Our best blind side?

One of several good centres?

Don't forget if we bring in a foreign SH then we need to lose TWO of our present NWQs!

Best option? Ignore the NWQ agreement.

I think it depends who we're bringing in. At the moment, the reason it looks as though Stitch is going is just because we have to let one go to reduce from 7 to 6. However, if we were going to sign up du Preez, im sure we could either terminate Spice's contract, or at least hand it over to a different club, one of the lesser English sides for example.
