Felipe Massa remains in a medically induced coma after suffering a 170mph crash during qualifying. Massa was knocked unconscious by a spring which flew up from the track and hit him in head. Despite being in a stable condition, his situation is still considered life threatening.

In Comma After
Horrific Crash

Ferrari released this statement following the incident:

"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.

Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."

Felipe's skull was indeed operated on to relieve the damage caused by the blow and its resulting hæmorrhaging. After the operation, Massa was placed in a comma to relieve pressure and prevent further damage to the brain. The medical centre's director Peter Bazso insisted this was necessary as Felipe Massa is still in a life threatening condition, stating:

"At the moment, we have to overcome this life-threatening condition, [to] remove the broken bones and stabilize the area."

Current speculation suggests Massa will not race during the remainder of the season, as he did not in Hungary. In fact it is quite probable he will never race again.

We at Ferrari 1 wish Felipe the quickest recovery and hope to see him racing again soon.
