Bahrain GP - Single point for Barrichello

Rubens Barrichello
By Andrew Hooper
March 14 2010
The 2010 Baharin Grand Prix would see the AT&T Williams team bring their drivers home in eleventh and fourteenth with Rubens Barrichello leading Nico Hulkenberg. Nico was forced to make an early pit stop which saw him drop down the order. Not a great result for the AT&T Williams team but at least both cars were able to finish the race if not showing a race pace that was encouraging.

 Bahrain GP Race Review

The AT&T Williams team would see their drivers qualify eleventh and thirteenth for the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix, with Rubens Barrichello ahead of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg. With no refuelling it would be a race that would see strategy again play a major role with tyre wear also being a vital factor. In 2009 the strategy was based around fuel now there would be so many other variables for the teams to consider. The Williams team was optimistic in regard to their prospects for a strong race. The Williams drivers would start the race with Rubens on the harder tyre and Nico the softer.

With the drivers in their cars the grid would move off on the parade lap for the forty nine lap 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix. Both of the HRT cars would start the race from the pits. With the cars starting 100 kilos heavier at the start than in 2009 the start would be interesting. On pole was Vettel from Massa, Alonso, Hamilton, Rosberg, Webber, Schumacher, Button, Kubica, and in tenth Sutil. Points will now be awarded down to tenth. The top nine drivers were all on the softer tyre with the rest of the field on the harder tyre.

BarrichelloThe grid would form up and with the red lights going out the first race of 2010 would get underway. It would be Vettel leading from the Ferrari's. At the back of the field there would be cars going everywhere. Webber had lots of smoke coming from his car but was able to continue. He was in eighth followed by Liuzzi and Barrichello in tenth. Nico Hulkenberg was in thirteenth. Lap one and Vettel was leading by 2.0 seconds from Alonso, Massa, Rosberg, Hamilton, Schumacher, Webber, and Button eighth. Kubica had dropped to twenty first joined by Sutil in twenty second. Chandhok was out after an accident explaining that he hit a bump and had his car launched off the track. while Vettel would set a fastest lap with a 2m:02.517 some eight seconds slower than his qualifying time. Nico Hulkenberg would have a moment spinning across the track dropping from thirteenth and down to seventeenth. Whether he lost control or whether he has hit was unknown. Di Grassi would retire his Virgin car at the same corner having a hydraulic problem. Nico would pit taking on the harder tyre rejoining in twenty second.

HulkenbergLap four and Vettel was now leading by 2.3 seconds from Alonso, Massa, Rosberg, Hamilton, Schumacher, Webber, Button, Liuzzi, and Barrichello in tenth. Rubens was 15.7 seconds behind the leader while Alonso at the end of lap five had closed the gap to Vettel to 2.1 seconds. After six laps it is Vettel from Alonso, Massa, Rosberg, Hamilton, Schumacher, Webber, Button and Liuzzi. Lap seven and Vettel would respond to extend his lead to 2.8 seconds. Hamilton was pushing Rosberg while on lap nine Massa went fastest with a 2m:02.494 and closing onto Alonso. Rubens was 2.6 seconds behind ninth placed Liuzzi. Petrov was running right with Rubens as on lap eleven Vettel set another fastest lap with a 2m:02.318. He was now 3.5 seconds ahead of Alonso and 5.6 seconds of Massa. Senna would pit on lap thirteen while Rubens sets a personal best of 2m:04.412 on lap twelve.

Kubica would also pit moving from the softer tyre to the medium compound. Glock would pass Kovalainen for seventeenth. A 2m:03.740 from Rubens on lap thirteenth while Petrov and Alguersuari would pit on lap fourteenth. Nico Hulkenberg was now in nineteenth while Petrov remained in his pit with a problem. De la Rosa would pit on lap fifteen while Kubica went fastest with a 2m:01.397. Vettel was now 5.1 seconds ahead of Alonso while Petrov and retired his car in his garage. Hamilton would pit on lap sixteen joined by Schumacher. Sutil was also in while at the front it was Vettel from Alonso, Massa, and Rosberg. Alonso was in on lap seventeen. He was joined by Rosberg, Webber, and Button. Another personal best with a 2m:03.425 from Rubens. Rosberg was held by his team as Button came in seeing him lose a place to Hamilton coming out of the pits. Lap eighteen and Vettel would pit followed by Massa.

BarrichelloHamilton was fastest with a 2m:00.447 as Glock retired his car in the pits. Liuzzi and Rubens were running in fourth and fifth. Rubens set a 2m:03.200 on lap eighteen but he would be passed by Hamilton at Turn one. Senna would pull of at Turn one with a very sick sounding engine. A new fastest lap from Massa on lap nineteen, 2m:00.117, as Rubens pitted on lap twenty taking on the softer tyre. Of the top ten only Liuzzi had yet to pit. Rubens was now in eleventh and Nico Hulkenberg in sixteenth. Liuzzi would pit on lap twenty one return in in tenth. Lap twenty five and Vettel was 2.8 seconds ahead of Alonso followed by Massa, Hamilton, Rosberg, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Liuzzi, and Rubens in tenth. Nico Hulkenberg would pit again on lap twenty seven seeing himself lapped in the process.

HulkenbergRubens was gaining from the use of the softer tyre setting a pace similar to the leaders. Vettel would set a 2m:00.320, a personal best, on lap twenty eight. De la Rosa would pit from twelfth on lap twenty nine. Alguersuari would set a fastest lap but was passed by Alonso with a 1m:59.583 on lap twenty nine. De la Rosa would retire in his pit. Alonso was now 1.5 seconds behind Vettel and pushing and on lap thirty it was down to 1.1 seconds. Rubens was 2.3 seconds behind ninth placed Liuzzi. Behind Rubens it was Kubica
with the Williams leading by 5.8 seconds. Alonso was finding it hard running behind Vettel seeing the gap open out to 2.2 seconds after lap thirty two. Many of the top ten were setting personal bests as their fuel loads lightened. A personal best from Hamilton on lap thirty three while at the front Alonso had closed right in onto Vettel.

Vettel would complain of a loss of power with both of the Ferrari's right with the Red Bull. Alonso would pass Vettel as they went into the final corner. Massa would pass Vettel in Turn one. So we had a Ferrari one-two. Hamilton was in fourth as Alonso set a 1m:59.447 for a new fastest lap. Alonso was now 3.9 seconds ahead of Massa. Rubens was still in tenth and Nico Hulkenberg in fifteenth. Hamilton was now 4.5 seconds behind Vettel and closing. Lap thirty six and another fastest lap from Alonso, 1m:58.879. He was easing away from Massa as Vettel's engineer said that it was an exhaust that had failed. Hamilton would pass Vettel for third on the main straight.

FW32Lap thirty seven and Alonso was now 5.7 seconds ahead of Massa. Could Rosberg catch Vettel with eleven laps to go? Behind Rosberg it was Schumacher from Button, Webber, Liuzzi, and Rubens. Hamilton was now complaining about a lot of vibration at the front of his car. Rubens was running very much by himself in tenth. Rosberg was slowly closing in onto Vettel with the gap 8.8 seconds after lap forty one. Both Lotus cars were still in the race with Trulli leading Kovalainen. Lap forty two and Rosberg was now 6.7 seconds behind Vettel. The next lap it was 4.8 seconds while at the front on lap forty four Alonso's lead was now 9.1 seconds from Massa and Hamilton. Rosberg was now 3.7 seconds behind Vettel as on lap forty five Alonso set a new fastest lap, 1m:58.287. Trulli has dropped to last with hydraulic problems.

Alonso would start his forty eighth lap with a 12.6 second lead from Massa, Hamilton, Vettel, Rosberg, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Liuzzi, and in tenth Rubens. Alonso would start his final lap and looking comfortable to take victory. Rosberg was not able to get past Vettel while Alonso would cross the line to take victory and with Massa second it was a one-two for Ferrari. It was a third for McLaren with Hamilton followed by Vettel, Rosberg, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Liuzzi, and the last point went to Rubens. Vettel would pull off at Turn one. Not a great result for the AT&T Williams team but at least both cars were able to finish the race if not showing a race pace that was encouraging.
