On the second
day of the Williams F1 teams Jerez test Pastor Maldonado would be back
behind the wheel. It was a sunny but cool day as Pastor took to the track
and his first flying lap would set a 1m:28.127. After completing four laps
Pastor would return to his
pit. After a short break Pastor would come back out again running on the
medium Pirelli tyres. On his next lap Pastor would set a 1m:26.063, with the
quickest time at this point was Webber with a 1m:20.641. AS Pastor completed
further laps his times would improve with a 1m:25.930. He would
continue to set a 1m:24.887 prior to pitting.
He would quickly return to the track seeing him set a 1m:22.538 followed by
a 1m:22.184 after completing twenty two laps. Webber had lowered the
quickest time with a 1m:19.682 after the opening couple of hours. Pastor
would complete further laps, thirty one after the first two hours,
prior to pitting again. He would return to the track and would again improve
his time with a 1m:21.529 after thirty seven laps. After their problems on
the first day the team was working well as they started to learn more
about the new FW34. After this run Pastor would again pit. In his last
two runs Pastor's times were mainly in the mid 1m:22s. Webber would improve
the quickest time with a 1m:19.184.
Pastor would complete another series of five or six lap runs during this
time he would improve his time with a 1m:21.197. Schumacher, in last
years car, was now fastest with a 1m:18.561, while Pastor had completed
sixty one laps by early afternoon. The Williams team would confirm
that they were doing some mechanical and aero setup work. Pastor would
remain in his pit for a considerable amount of time.
It was later
confirmed that this was simply to check the new car prior to Pastor
returning to the track later in the afternoon. He would return to the track
completing ninety seven laps. His times in the afternoon runs were in the
1m:22s.
Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: We successfully completed the
majority of our planned test programme today with Pastor covering 97
laps. We performed a mixture of mechanical and aerodynamic set-up tests, in
addition to continued engine and KERS
systems checks. Bruno will have his first outing in the car tomorrow as we
switch driver for the final two days of the test.
Pastor Maldonado: We ran through our test programme and covered everything
we needed to today. We did some long runs this afternoon and the car is
looking good. We will now spend some time analysing all of the data we have
gathered. It’s good to put more mileage
on the FW34 and we now aim to continue that throughout the next two days.
The Williams F1 Team will be back on track tomorrow, Thursday 9 February,
with Bruno Senna driving the FW34 for the third day of the test. |
