Hungarian GP: Bottas 5th for Williams in FP3

By Andrew Hooper
July 26 2014

The final practice session for the 2014 Hungarian GP would see Williams Martini driver Valtteri Bottas finish in 5th. At one stage Valtteri had been quickest but dropped down the times. For his team-mate Felipe Massa his session would see him drop outside the top ten finishing in 11th. A very positive session for Valtteri but Felipe certainly seems to be having a difficult time.

On another sunny day the final practice session for the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix would get underway with Felipe Massa take to the track for the Williams Martini team. He was followed shortly after by team-mate Valtteri Bottas. First out has being the Torro Rosso's of Vergne and Kvyat. More drivers would take to the track as both Williams drivers pitted after their installation laps. A number of drivers were practicing their starts at the end of the pitlane before getting underway. Everyone was on the medium tyre for their first runs with a handful of drivers completing two laps prior to pitting. Yet to come out was Button and the two Force India cars.

Kobayashi would set the first time with a 1m:30.267 but both Rosberg and Magnussen would go quicker. Rosberg was fastest with a 1m:26.374 as Hulkenberg took to the track. We also had Hamilton, Kvyat, and Maldonado out on the track. Rosberg was on a quicker lap but would run wide at Turn twelve ruining his lap. Hamilton would set a 1m:30.055 on his first timed lap. Kvyat would move ahead of Hamilton with a 1m:27.891 with Perez having left the pits for the first time. Maldonado was now fourth, 1m:28.108, as we had both Marussia's on the track. Hulkenberg was now third with a time of 1m:27.872 while for Williams Valtteri would return to the track for his first timed run. Felipe would follow shortly after with both still on the medium tyre.

Kvyat was now third, 1m:27.220, followed by Hulkenberg and Maldonado. Perez was now fourth, 1m:27.701, followed now by Hulkenberg and Gutierrez. Valtteri was on his first timed lap as Magnussen pitted. Valtteri would complete his lap setting a 1m:26.949 to be second. Felipe would set a slow 1m:32.029 as Rosberg improved his time with a 1M;26.292 to lead Valtteri by 0.657. But Felipe would move ahead of Valtteri to be third, 1m:26.694, to be behind Vettel who was second. Ricciardo would be third but Valtteri would move to the top of the times with a 1m:26.240. Rosberg was now second and had pitted, followed by Vettel, Ricciardo, Felipe, Raikkonen, Magnussen, Kvyat, Perez, and Vergne tenth.

Yet to set a time was Alonso as Ricciardo went fastest in sector two. Ricciardo would move ahead of Valtteri with a time of 1m:25.999. Felipe had pitted from his first six lap run. Valtteri was also back in pit as Button moved into eleventh. With thirty five minutes remaining the track now saw three cars Raikkonen, Button, and Sutil still running. Rosberg would come back out for a further run with Sutil pitting. Both Williams drivers now in discussing setup changes. More drivers were coming back out including both Force India cars and Hamilton and Alonso. Ricciardo would also leave his pit with twenty eight minutes remaining in the session. On his first lap Alonso would set a 1m:25.954 to go quickest over Ricciardo and Valtteri. Both Williams drivers were back out still on the medium tyre as Raikkonen and Button both pitted.

Drivers were still struggling with Ricciardo and Kvyat running wide at Turn four as Hamilton moved into eighth with a 1m:26.869. Prior to this he had been having difficulties with his brakes. Hamilton would go quickest in sector one seeing him finish his lap with a 1m:25.682 to be quickest over Alonso. Alonso and Ricciardo had both pitted as Hulkenberg complained about the windy conditions at certain parts of the track. Felipe would pit briefly coming back out with both Valtteri and Felipe on longer run on their medium tyres. Both Williams drivers would come back in with the track again fairly quite. With fifteen minutes left in the session the next runs would see the soft tyre fitted as the drivers complete their qualifying simulations. Hamilton was fastest from Alonso, Ricciardo, Valtteri, Rosberg, Vettel, Raikkonen, Felipe, Magnussen, and in tenth Kvyat.

Alonso would be first back out on the soft tyre followed by Raikkonen. With ten minutes left we only had the two Ferrari's out on the option tyre but they were followed by Magnussen and Rosberg. Valtteri would come back out also on the soft tyre as Alonso set a 1m:24.769 while Raikkonen would set a 1m:24.818 to be second behind his team-mate. There were only a handful of drivers still in their pits as Felipe also came back out. Hamilton was now third but Rosberg would go quickest with a 1m:24.501 while for Williams Valtteri would move into second with a 1m:24.585. Alonso was now third followed by Raikkonen, Magnussen, Kvyat, Button, and Hamilton now eighth. But Hamilton was on a quick lap setting a 1m:24.048 to go quickest. Vettel would move into second seeing Valtteri now fourth behind Rosberg. Felipe was now down in ninth with a time of 1m:25.231. Alonso would pit with just minutes remaining in the session. Ricciardo would set a 1m:24.692 to be fifth with Felipe having dropped to eleventh. Hamilton would pit with the session coming to a close. Valtteri would also come in joining Felipe as the track started to empty.

So with the end of the session the order was Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, Ricciardo, Valtteri, Alonso, Raikkonen, Magnussen, Vergne, and Kvyat in tenth. Felipe would remain in eleventh a half second off his team mates time. Both Williams drivers would complete their standard pit stops upon returning to their pits. A very positive session for Valtteri but Felipe certainly seems to be having a difficult time. The lack of the latest floor may have contributed to this lack of pace.
