Monaco GP: Williams Martini outside top ten in FP1

The opening Thursday practice session for the 2017 Monaco GP would see both Williams Martini drivers finish outside the top ten. Felipe Massa would finish in 11th while team-mate Lance Stroll was in 16th. Lance would finish around a second slower than his team-mate in what was a learning exercise for the rookie. Both drivers would focus on the ultra soft tyre during what was an uneventful session for the Williams team.

Team Summary:
As drivers came out for their installation laps there was a mixture of soft, super soft and ultra soft tyres. Both Williams drivers would complete their installation with Lance returning to start his first run on the circuit. The first time set by Verstappen would be a 1m:19.424 from Verstappen running on the ultra soft tyre. Bottas would go quicker with a 1m:16.852 followed by a 1m:16.347 running on the super soft tyres. Hamilton was also on the super soft tyre currently second. Bottas would set a 1m:15.971 followed by a 1m:15.408. Both Red Bull cars were on the circuit with Ricciardo going third. Verstappen would move ahead into third with Ricciardo fourth.

A 1m:15.111 from Bottas with Hamilton setting a 1m:15.342 to be second. But Verstappen would go second with a 1m:15.306. At the front Ricciardo would go quickest with a 1m:14.884 but he was using the ultra soft tyre compared to the super soft of the Mercedes. Both Mercedes cars would pit with Vettel now fifth and Raikkonen eighth. But Vettel would go quickest with a 1m:14.289 while for Torro Rosso Kvyat was sixth with a 1m:15.458 running on the super soft tyre. Team-mate Sainz would jump to fourth also on the super soft tyre. Sainz was now in third with a 1m:14.983. He would drop to fourth as Kvyat went second with a 1m:14.640. Verstappen was in his pit with an issue as his mechanics were taking his floor off.

For Williams the pair were fourth and fifteenth after their first runs with Felipe well ahead of his team-mate. Perez would move up to second with a 1m:14.583 seeing Kvyat now third. Both Mercedes were out on the ultra soft tyre with Hamilton moving up to second with a 1m:14.355. Bottas would move ahead with a 1m:14.301 also on the ultra soft tyre. Hamilton would find a lot of time to set a 1m:13.945 to go quickest by 0.344 over Vettel. But Bottas would set a 1m:13.828 to go quicker than his team-mate. Hamilton would respond setting a 1m:13.429 to again be quickest. The order was Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Perez, Massa, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Sainz, Magnussen and Raikkonen. Vettel would improve to be second with a 1m:13.621 with Bottas now third with a 1m:13.791.

Thirty minutes remaining and the Williams drivers were now eighth and fourteenth. The order was now Hamilton, Vettel, Bottas, Ricciardo, Perez, Raikkonen, Ocon, Massa, Kvyat and Sainz in tenth. Both Torro Rosso cars were still on the super soft tyre. Raikkonen would go fifth with Perez and Ocon following. Verstappen was back out and would move to fifth behind Ricciardo. He would later in the session move up to third with a 1m:13.781 with ten minutes remaining. He would improve with a 1m:13.771 but remained third. The session would come to a close the top ten was Hamilton, Vettel, Verstappen, Bottas, Ricciardo, Kvyat, Raikkonen, Perez, Sainz and Ocon. The Williams drivers would finish the session with their drivers in eleventh and sixteenth.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would follow his team-mate out for his installation lap also using the soft tyre. Twenty minutes into the session and Felipe had yet to return to the track. Felipe would finally take to the track with an hour and five remaining. He was back out on the ultra soft tyre. Felipe would set a 1m:16.535 to be twelfth but his next lap was a 1m:15.795 to be tenth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:15.726 but he had dropped to eleventh. A 1m:15.251 from Felipe would see him eighth. But Felipe was able to find a considerable amount of time setting a 1m:14.950 to be fourth, dropping to fifth. Forty nine minutes remaining and Felipe continued to lap the circuit currently sixth. Felipe was able to find time setting a 1m:14.617 to be fifth. Felipe would pit after an eight lap run. Felipe would drop to sixth to be behind Perez. This would become eighth as Raikkonen and Ocon went quicker. With twenty minutes remaining Felipe was now eleventh as he returned to the track running on the used ultra soft tyres. Despite been on used tyres he would continue to lap the circuit. Like Lance he would complete a practice start on the grid prior to pitting.

Lance Stroll:
Lance would take to the track for his first run on the Monaco circuit running on the soft tyre. Lance would pit taking on the ultra soft tyre and then returning to the track. His first timed lap would be quite slow setting a 1m:28.532. His next lap was a 1m:22.223 as he started to learn the circuit. Next lap was a further improvement with a 1m:20.105. As the laps counted off he would continue to improve setting a 1m:18.317. His laps times would continue to drop as he set a 1m:17.482 with fifteen minutes of the session completed. Lance would drop from fifth to ninth as others started to go quicker. But Lance would improve again with a 1m:17.149. Lance would continue to lap the circuit, currently eleventh.

As his team-mate took to the track Lance had completed fifteen laps on the ultra soft tyre. He was currently twelfth. Lance would pit having completed seventeen laps but he would return only to pit again and also return to the track. Lance was now fourteenth as he continued to put in the laps trying to get to grips of the Monaco circuit. Lance would pit after twenty laps on the ultra soft tyre. He was currently fifteenth. He would return to the track with forty minutes remaining on a new set of ultra soft tyres. Lance would set his best lap time with a 1m:16.247 but would remain fifteenth 1.7 seconds behind his team-mate. Lance would again find time with a 1m:15.595 to now be fourteenth. As he was out for his second run Lance would drop to fifteenth with twenty minutes remaining he would pit having completed sixteen laps. His stop would be brief put he would pit after a single extra lap. He had dropped to sixteenth to be behind Button. Lance had completed a total of forty laps. Lance would return to the track just minutes remaining but he would pit again returning to complete a practice start.
