Austrian GP: No improvement for Williams Martini in FP2

The second Friday practice session for the 2017 Austrian GP would see no improvement from the Williams Martini team. Despite having completed runs on the ultra soft tyre for the first time the Williams drivers could only manage 14th and 16th. Felipe Massa would again finish ahead of team-mate Lance Stroll. After their inital runs both drivers would complete longer runs on the ultra soft tyre followed by a split programme with both the soft and super soft tyres been used, with Felipe on the soft and Lance the super soft.

Team Summary:
The second Friday practice for the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix would see the opening thirty minutes with the Williams drivers splitting their programme with one driver using the soft and the other the super soft. After their first runs they were fourteenth and fifteenth. At this time it was Hamilton quickest with a 1m:05.483 followed by Vettel and Bottas. The Mercedes would set their times on the ultra soft tyre while Vettel was on the super soft tyre. Verstappen was fourth followed by Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Magnussen, Ocon, Vandoorne, and Kvyat in tenth. Ricciardo would move up to fourth using the ultra soft tyre. Verstappen was fifth followed by Raikkonen, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Grosjean and Ocon.

The top three were all running in what were longer runs with the Mercedes pair on the ultra soft tyre and Vettel the super soft. Both Williams cars were back in their pits with forty minutes remaining in the session. Other drivers were on longer runs on the ultra soft tyre with only Vettel on a different tyre. Bottas would join Vettel on the super soft tyre while Raikkonen would come out on a used soft tyre. Alonso would move up to eighth seeing Hulkenberg ninth. Both Williams drivers wre back out with twenty seven minutes remaining. Verstappen would improve with a 1m:05.832 to be fourth, while Ricciardo was now fifth.

Fifteen laps remaining and both Williams drivers were continuing on their longer runs. Vettel had switched to the ultra soft tyre and was also on a longer run. Raikkonen continued on his longer soft tyre run. The Williams drivers would again split their programme with Felipe on the soft and Lance the super soft after their ultra soft tyre runs. Eighth placed Alonso would run wide at Turn six taking to the gravel but he was able to continue. The session would end with the top ten was Hamilton, Vettel, Bottas, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Magnussen, Alonso, Hulkenberg and Grosjean tenth. The Williams drivers would remain in fourteenth and sixteenth. This session had seen no real improvement from either Williams driver with both dropping down the times.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would use the soft tyre for his first run run setting a 1m:07.358 to finish in fourteenth prior to pitting. He had completed fifteen laps on the soft tyre. Felipe would return for his next run this time on the ultra soft tyre. Felipe would set a 1m:07.100 but would remain fourteenth. He would drop to fifteenth with Felipe was saying that the car was terrible in the high speed corners. Felipe would pit after a five lap run. He would pit briefly returning for a three lap run still on the ultra soft tyre. Felipe had set a 1m:07.065 but remained fourteenth.

Felipe would pit briefly as he continued his run on the ultra soft tyre. Felipe would have an off-track moment during his run. Felipe would pit with just under ten minutes remaining. He had completed twenty eight laps on the ultra soft tyre. He would return on a used set of soft tyres. With the end of the session Felipe would pit having completed a total of twenty five laps on the soft tyre and fifty laps in total.

Lance Stroll:
Lance was on a different tyre for his first run using the super soft tyre for his firs run. He would set a 1m:07.526 to be fifteenth one place behind his team-mate. Lance would join his team-mate also using the ultra soft tyre. Lance would set a 1m:07.468 which was only a small improvement but was now sixteenth. Lance would complain that he was losing the rear and that there was no point in doing anymore laps so he would pit but it was a brief stop. After a three lap run he would pit again. He would return after a longer pit stop coming back out on used ultra soft tyres. Lance would pit and would switch to the super soft tyre. He had completed twenty one laps on the ultra soft tyre. Lance would say that his car felt wrong under traction coming out of corners. Lance had completed twenty five laps in total on the super soft tyre and forty six laps in total.
