Hungarian GP: Williams Martini fails to improve in FP2
By Andrew Hooper
July 28 2017
The second Friday practice session for the 2017 Hungarian GP would see the Williams Martini team fail to show any real sign of improvement in the session. The session would see Lance Stroll and Felipe Massa finish in 14th and 15th. Both drivers would finish over two seconds off the quickest time. For Felipe his session would see spins as well as having to pit with a problem with his car. If this is the pace of the FW40 for the weekend it is going to be another difficult qualifying and race for the Williams team.

first series of laps the Williams drivers were eleventh and fifteenth. The
track was quite with only a few cars as drivers completed their runs on the
soft tyre.
Raikkonen was first out on the super soft tyre. Bottas would join him with
Raikkonen going second with a 1m:18.890. Vettel would go quickest with a
1m:18.638 with Hamilton now second from Raikkonen. But Raikkonen would move
up to second 0.117 behind his team-mate. Bottas would move up to second
while on the super soft tyre Hulkenberg would move up to seventh. Raikkonen
would stop out on the track saying he had no throttle but he was able to
recover and return to the pits. Ricciardo would go quickest with a
1m:18.455. After their super soft tyre runs the Williams drivers were
fourteenth and fifteenth, with both drivers well over two seconds off the
quickest pace. The session would be red flagged when Wehrlein would crash at
Turn eleven.
The session would get underway with just under thirty minutes remaining. The
teams would start their race simulations in the last third of the session.
The track was very busy with both Williams cars running on the soft tyre.
The session would again be red flagged with Palmer coming into the final
corner and the back end would step out seeing him go off damaging the right
rear of his car. The session would restart with twelve minutes remaining.
More drivers were switching to the soft tyre for their final runs. As the
session drew to a close the Williams drivers were in fourteenth and
fifteenth. With the end of the session it was Ricciardo still quickest
followed by Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Verstappen, Hulkenberg,
Alonso, Sainz and Vandoorne tenth. For the Williams team it was a session
that saw no improvement with both drivers well off the pace. If this is the
pace of the FW40 for the weekend it is going to be another difficult
qualifying and race for the Williams team.

been on the super soft tyre Felipe would not improve with a replay showing
Massa losing the rear mid-corner at Turn 5 and unable to gather it up. He
would continue without damage while he dropped to fourteenth. Felipe would
say that losing the rear of the car was very easy as he spun for the second
time. Felipe would pit having completed a five lap run. He would ask the
team to check his car as its troublesome handling continued. Felipe would
join Lance also on used soft tyres. But Felipe would pit after only a
handful of laps. But he would quickly return to the track continuing his
soft tyre run. He would pit having put seventeen laps on the soft tyres
having told his engineer that he had a problem. Felipe would end his session
in his pit.

1m:22.315 to be thirteenth dropping to fourteenth. Lance would improve with
a 1m:21.466 improving to twelfth but he would drop to thirteenth. After a
seven lap run Lance would pit currently fifteenth. Lance had run wide at
Turn four avoiding any damage on the kerbs. Lance would also come back out
running on the super soft tyre. Lance would set a 1m:20.791 to be
thirteenth. He would drop to fourteenth complaining of too much oversteer.
He would also pit after eight laps on the super soft tyre. With the restart
Lance was back out on used soft tyres. Lance would switch to used super soft
tyres for another run after the restart. Lance would continue to put laps on
