Spanish GP: Qualifying sees usual result for ROKiT Williams

Qualifying for the 2019 Spanish GP would see the ROKiT Williams Team finish in what is currently very much their expected positions that of slowest. The session would see George Russell finish ahead of team-mate Robert Kubica by a considerable margin. But Robert will start ahead of George was George had incured a five place grid penalty due to a gearbox change. George's laptime was only 0.4 to the car in front which was an encouraging result for the Williams Team.

Team Summary:
The first car out for qualifying would be a Williams but other drivers would come out with everyone running on the soft tyre. The Williams would go fastest, if only temporarily, but Stroll would set a 1m:19.113 to move ahead. Vettel would set a 1m:18.068 with Leclerc going quicker with a 1m:17.835. Hulkenberg would go off at Turn four, the same corner as George Russell, damaging the front of his car. He was able to get back to his pit while Verstappen was now quickest with a 1m:17.244. Gasly was now fourth followed by Sainz, Albon, and Kvyat. Bottas would go quickest with a 1m:17.175 while Hamilton was third behind Verstappen.

Leclerc was now third as Hulkenberg returned to the track with five minutes remaining. There were only two cars out on the track but more would return for their second runs. With the end of the period Bottas would remain quickest while for Williams they would again be knocked out finishing 19th and 20th with George 1.1 seconds ahead of Robert. The second period of qualifying would be totally dominated by the Mercedes drivers with Bottas ahead of Hamilton. Vettel would be third followed by Leclerc, Verstappen, Gasly, Grosjean, Kvyat, Magnussen, and Ricciardo tenth. The final period would see Bottas again dominate the period ending on pole ahead of Hamilton, Vettel, Verstappen, Leclerc, Gasly, Grosjean, Magnussen, Kvyat and Ricciardo. Williams will start from the rear of the grid but Robert would be ahead of team-mate George due to George's five place grid penalty due to his gearbox change.

 
Kubica
 

Robert Kubica:
Robert would be the first driver to come out for qualifying, running on the soft tyre. Robert would set a 1m:21.860. Robert would pit after just a two lap run. Robert would return on anew set of soft tyres. Robert would improve with a 1m:20.254. After his second run Robert would pit joining his team-mate. Robert would return again on new soft tyres. But he would not improve remaining 1.1 seconds behind his team-mate.

George Russell:
George would follow his team-mate out also on the soft tyre. He would have a quick spin at the final chicane nearly making contact with the returning Renault of Hulkenberg. George would finally set a time of 1m:19.937 to move ahead of his team-mate. He would pit after a five lap run. George would come out for one more run and would set a 1m:19.072 remaining 19th. George will get a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change as a result of his crash in FP3. This was a solid time to be just 0.6 behind Stroll. George would say in interviews: "Good session ... I was pleased with that last effort".
