By Andrew Hooper
August 2 2019
The second Friday practice session for the 2019 Hungarian GP would see rain hamper the ROKiT Williams Teams programme with both George Russell and Robert Kubica only getting limited running in the dry. Both drivers would run the updated package but rain would fall early on seeing the pair only been able to complete two runs on the intermediate tyre to finish off their sessions. It was not a sessionw here any real comparison could be made between the two drivers.
ROKiT Williams
Hungarian GP Friday 2nd Practice
Team Summary:
The second Friday practice session for the 2019 Hungarian GP would see a
rush of drivers coming out. The first time was et by Bottas with a 1m:19.416
running on the medium tyre. Other drivers on the soft tyre would go quicker
with Raikkonen quickest with a 1m:19.174 followed by Gasly and Bottas. But
the sesssion would be red flag when Albon was to crash going into the final
corner. He was to drop his rear tyre onto the grass seeing him spin into the
barriers. Prior to this quite a few drivers were out on the hard tyre as
well as the medium. With the restart Bottas was straight back out joined by
a large number of other driver with all three tyre types been used.
Bottas would set a 1m:18.289 on the medium tyre. Ricciardo was now second
followed by Hamilton. But Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:18.110.
Verstappen was now second and Bottas third. Gasly was an early fourth
followed by Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Leclerc, and Kvyat. But Giovinazzi was now
seventh behind Raikkonen. On the soft tyre Gasly would go quickest with a
1m:17.854 and team-mate Verstappen second except on the medium tyre. But the
rain was back and starting to increase seeing the track empty. Even with the
rain Bottas would return but on the intermediate tyre. Kvyat, Perez, and
Raikkonen would also complete single laps on the intermediate tyre.
With just over fifty minutes remaining Giovinazzi and Norris were back out
for a single lap runs. Sainz would come out for a run on the medium tyre but
the rain would increase seeing him run wide at Turn twelve. With twenty five
minutes remaining Raikkonen would come out running on the intermediate tyre.
He would be joined by both Ferrari's and Giovinazzi. The track was becoming
busy with more drivers out running on intermediate tyres including both
Williams cars. The session would come to an end as the rain continued to
fall. Gasly would remain quickest from Verstappen, Hamilton, Bottas,
Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Leclerc, Hulkenberg, Giovinazzi and Kvyat in tenth. It
was a session where really nothing in terms of conclusions could be drawn
especially for both Williams drivers. Even though both Williams drivers were
running the updated package the rain put a stop to any real comparison
between Robert and George.
Robert Kubica:
Robert was out early in the second Friday practice session running on the
soft tyre. Robert would set a 1m:21.557 prior to having to pit with a red
flag. with the restart Robert would be the first back out for Williams still
on the soft tyre. He would improve with a 1m:21.160 followed by a 1m:20.439.
Robert would pit after a five lap run avoiding the rain. Robert was seen
getting out of his car. But he would return coming back out running on the
intermediate tyre with twenty minutes remaining. Robert would also pit after
a four lap run. But he would return again on intermediate tyres. He would
pit just before the end of the session. Robert in post session interviews
would comment on the days running by saying: "Today conditions were
changeable ... we did have to test some parts ... aiming to understand them
better ... conditions were better in FP1 and I was able to complete my
programme." Asked about his fans he added: "It is great feels like been at
home ... I hope for a good weekend and I hope they enjoy it."
George Russell:
George would follow his team-mate out also on the soft tyre. George would
not set a time prior to the red flag. With fifteen minutes completed George
would return also on the soft tyre. On his first lap George would set a
1m:19.889 to be 05 ahead of his team-mate. He would pit after a four lap run
also coming in with the rain. George would join others out on the
intermediate tyre. His lap time was a 1m:38.975, twenty seconds slower.
Robert would pit after a four lap run. George would also come out for a
second run on the intermediate tyre pitting just before the end of the
session.
