conclusion after 2 races...
SepangFanatic 27 March, 2012 07:03
let me start first:

1. Vettel learn how to race from 3rd/4th row.

That's not fair IMO, he was 2nd in Australia and 4th in Sepang before the puncture, both times leading his teammate who had started ahead of him. I'm not a SV fan, but I think his inability to perform away from the lead is greatly exaggerated.

My conclusions:

1. The field is incredibly tight.

When Perez was 3rd after the restart, I was certain he'd plummet down the field. When Alonso and Perez were leading I still thought Hamilton and the Red Bulls would pass them as the track dried.

While three teams seem way ahead in Q, there seems to be very little separating the top 6(!) teams regarding race pace (McLaren, Red Bull, Lotus, Williams, Sauber, Ferrari or rather Alonso).

2. Williams isn't taken seriously as usual.

This is a qoute from Alonso at the Thursday PC before the Malaysia weekend:

In Australia, no one thought that we could finish fifth. I think there were two McLarens, two Red Bulls, McLarens (he may mean Mercedes), Saubers, Toro Rossos so there were a lot of people quicker than us.

That's right, Maldonado hounded him for position in the closing stages of the race, yet he mentions Toro Rosso over Williams.

This is something I've felt going on for years. Let's forget about 2011 where Williams didn't deserve to be talked about at all. But for the last few years, regardless of performance, Williams gets the least attention of the midfield teams. I'd say they get even less than Caterham!

I think Alonso hates Williams, few years ago SFW said he would never sign Alonso but I dont remember exactly the reason.

WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING

After Melbourne, Alonso said "fighting with a Williams was not where they wanted to be". He clearly doesn't rate this team.

I agree with A.Fant. Vettel's incident with Karthikeyan was a miniscule error from both drivers- otherwise, I have been impressed with his wheel-to-wheel racing this season. He's dispatched Rosberg with ease on a couple of occasions now- Melbourne being a classic.

Otherwise, I don't think it's premature to conclude that Williams have done a reasonable job over the winter. Obviously the picture can change with major upgrades due for all teams, but the Malyaisan grid was fairly predictable. I would say the Q form is:

McLaren
RedBull/Mercedes/Lotus
Alonso
Williams/Sauber
Toro Rosso
Force India
Caterham
Marussia
HRT

and race pace in the dry:

McLaren
RedBull
Lotus/Williams/Sauber
Alonso
Toro Rosso/Force India
Mercedes
Caterham
Marussia
HRT

We also have an opportunity to copy a clever exhaust if the design team thinks it will yield enough lap time to pursue (and I suspect it will) which allows us to close further, but first the team needs to work on traction out of corners. In both Malaysia and Australia it was clear that the cars our drivers were trying to overtake got much better exits out of the corners. (Alonso out of the last corner in Australia could put a few car lengths to Maldonado out of the last corner whilst Maldonado struggled to collect rear grip) and various cars ahead of Senna in Malaysia when going onto the first of the two long straights. I believe there is a relatively large update coming for the next race but don't take my word for it.

Williams did the fastest pit stop of the race in Malaysia. That is a refreshing change!

Again NO. Some people don't have a clue about F1.

That was when Maldonado missed his pit box so that wasn't a pitstop.

That's a bit harsh, I do have more of a clue than you'd think actually, being a motorsport engineering student with a year in industry of racing. I would have assumed that when he said that, HE would have known what he was talking about. I'm not going to sit here and analyse pit stops myself because frankly, I'm far too busy.

I wasn't referring to you, I was referring to the great Ted Lenny Kravitz who despite of being working as a F1 reporter since 96 or I don't know when still doesn't know anything about F1.

Aren't they about 1.4 seconds off the Williams?

Caterham must be the biggest disappointment so far. My impression is that the team has made no real step nearer the midfield and the Marussia, without testing or KERS, has even closed on them. Coughlan and Symonds are evidently doing a better job than Gascoyne. I wonder what Fernandes thinks about this.

Team mate wars are interesting. Vergne looking comfortable already against Ricciardo, Petrov providing Heikki with some real competition and no contest whatsoever between Alonso and Massa.

Re: conclusion after 2 races...
Mikef1 27 March, 2012 14:55
Heikki probably got comfortable with Trulli last season and now he realizes he's got to pull his finger out and race again. Petrov is a decent driver and Senna did okay against him, I think Senna will come good for us yet. Maldonado is still learning too, but he could one day turn into a mighty driver. He's very quick and Senna is doing a good job in the races to have a reasonable lap time in comparison. Senna needs to work on qualifying

Difficult to argue with that one really. Vettel is not yet a match. I would have argued that Lewis was better but he's lost something in the last 2 years. Jenson is pretty close but I think Alonso would just outscore him in the same car over a year, maybe.

Williams CAN score podiums this year! (looking very forward to Monaco and Spa, where our two boys are very good).

The FW34 compact rear end seems to be finally paying off!

Sadly, Renault engines are no longer the best, without RBDs.

Adrian Newey is not going to sit and watch as RBR is outperformed by McLaren & the Ferries. He'll go totally bald this year!

Same w Mercedes being outraced by its two engine customers. Ross is going to keep pushing until they make the FW-Duct & the whole car work better.

So, Williams' season depends on the pace of our development as compared to others. Judging by what we have seen so far, our development should be good, unlike 2011.

Also, of course, Alex Wurz should do some real work for Williams with our drivers. In Pastor's case, he needs few tips to be faster (he's probably faster than Alex ever was), but both drivers need some SERIOUS psycho counseling to get those butterflies out of their tummies during stressful situations. Maybe they just need more experience.

Williams can finish 6th or better this year.

Its sad being 6th is a "good" thing for Williams... But getting back to the top will take time.

He is leading the championship with a tricycle .... in Malaysia, he has done something epic...fantastic smiling smiley

Ferrari have a dog car, no doubt about it. Alonso won cause of the rain and their strategy, enough said.

I would love to see Alonso in a normal dry weekend.... I do have a high rating for Alonso but his attitude is not the best out there.
