Can we please call for patience?
GroveF1 25 March, 2012 20:16
Dear all,

Given some of the comments made in the race thread most noteably, is it fair to call for patience with our Team and Drivers?

I am not saying don't criticise their performance, like "why didn't Senna pit two laps ago etc" - that is why we are fans and makes the forum the debate it is. What I mean is given the performance of the last 6/7 years' cars do you honestly expect the sponsors to be knocking at the door to sign up at RBS sponsorship levels?

Unfortunately, due to their own doing as we have discussed on here before, Williams are currently in a position where they have to take Pay Drivers to "keep the wolf from the door" and to aid in car design and development, the money from Pastor last year which you have to say has resulted in the FW34 - a car challenging for the Top 6 in the 2 races.

As Frank Williams has said before, we need to provide the car capable of winning first before top drivers look at us. Were people like Alonso (to go to an extreme) going to sign up with Williams this year based on a hope that because we had a new Technical Team and there will be a better car? I think not.

We also have to allow the Technical staff time to progress the team, we were in the doldrums for too long and they have got off to a good start.

People may not like the drivers, but given a few races I am sure Pastor and Bruno will cut out the mistakes in time. You also need to remember the team are still learning about the car all the time.

Thanks Guys

My word. I've just read the race thread - it's a complete farce.
Lots of drivers made mistakes this weekend, it was a hard race for them. Lets not forget driving a f1 car in the rain ain't easy. Senna was fantastic for us and Pastor was unlucky. Both of them did rather well considering they could have ended up smashing into the tyre barrier somewhere.

Some of the comments made are funny but perhaps more indicative of a mans/womens unhealthy obsession than the performance of Team Willy, who incidentally, i thought did rather well in turning around a bad situation.

I totally agree Grove F1. I'm a massive Williams fan and also a fan of Senna. It's not because of his name or who his uncle was. As a Mansell fan, his uncle was the scourge of my life! I'm a fan for the same reason as I'm a JB fan. I watched him through the early formula and saw something I liked in his racecraft, attitude and personality.

I'm prepared to change my view on Pastor, which at the moment, is that of a crash kid. That was also built up through the junior formulae which I doubt many on here watched.

But the board seems to be somewhow divided. One camp says both drivers are idiots. One (large one) says Pastor is our saviour and Bruno is a token gimmick. The other says Senna is god and Pastor is an idiot.

I think we need to get real and stop slagging our drivers. Pastor is quick but he needs to STOP MAKING MISTAKES. Bruno is smooth but he needs to get more out of the car in quali and also get more race savi so he can avoid small errors.

I think what we need is a reset. We've been placed in a situation where we actually have a real car again and I guess it's hard to adjust.

Williams is BACK in F1.

all this is true, but the tension of the race and years of hell bring to have impatience winking smiley

I've been patient since 2006 . . . surely six years is enough for anyone?

I read the same board and don't have that impression.

I've said before, concerns are justified. Pastor is really quick but he never mastered the reverse grid races in GP2 . . . in fact he was hopeless. Bruno is not a rookie either by any means so excuses can't be made there either.

The trouble is, this is too like Groundhog day. In 2009, we totally failed to capitalise on starting the season with a quick car.

But Bruno put in a good drive today. He got some serious points.

Agree 100% w GroveF1.

The thing is, as team supporters its OK to point at mistakes our drivers or the team makes, but we are not in high school here. Lets put things in the proper context.

I think it would be good if some folks here could imagine their comments being taken into account by the team when it comes to making decisions.

As I said in the Malaysia race thread: What if Pastor's engine failure, which robbed us of a double top10 weekend, could be traced back to a single mistake by a mechanic who didn't tighten a nut properly? Would we sack him? perhaps if it was a chronic thing (like Nakajima's continued lack of decent performance), maybe. But if the guy is an otherwise good mechanic who made a stupid mistake once or twice, it makes no sense to be asking for his dismissal, as it takes time and resources to find a comparable one, train him and acclimatize him with the team.

The same goes for drivers. I think the team needs some stability in that regard. Give a good platform for Bruno and Pastor to develop and get more experience and give us good performances (like Monaco 2011, Melbourne 2012 until the last lap, and to an extend Bruno's 2012 Malaysia), and show that Williams is back... and then we will attract sponsors and be attractive to top experienced drivers. And maybe, maybe, our current guys will actually turn out to be so good, that we would not want to replace them. I mean, imagine a Maldonado without the rookie mistakes? Can you get De La Rosa, who rarely makes mistakes, to be as fast as Pastor is?

So, lets think twice before writing, or rather, lets avoid drinking while writing comments here (which is what I sense given the crazy comments by some here).

Put things in a balance: We are finally in an upward trend. Thins are going to get a lot better for us now that we have a decent car, good tech staff, and reasonable promising drivers.

agree with you 100 % pancho. i wrote the following on fridays session thread but i dont think it was seen

it really does seem like some forum members like nothing but driver bashing here on this williams forum.

im getting a bit sick of it to be honest.

last week pastor was an idiot and today it seems bruno cant drive a f1 car fast and needs to be replaced.

get real... it seems some forum members are not prepared to get behind the team and SUPPORT.

and yes i did shout that last word.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Senna will come good. Pastor is outright faster, and on his day, unbeatable. Bruno is to Pastor as Jenson is to Lewis. Or at least, I think that's how it will pan out over the course of the season. Both good in their own ways.

I'm more angry at the time of the race than anything else. Wet season...in the late afternoon...when it rains the most... it's silly.

And by the way. The FW34 is up there with Red Bull and Lotus in terms of race pace. Qualifying pace and the relative inexperience of the drivers will see a slightly underwhelming finish to the season compared to the car's race pace, but Williams are back. Senna was catching kimi until his tyres started to fade. Kimi, being on hards, was faster later which proved to be the right choice as the hards were faster in the final 10 laps.

Add 23 odd seconds to the finishing time of Pastor and Bruno for having to make their extra stops and we would have seen a 4-6 finish.

I don't post in race, practice, or qualifying threads while the cars are on track for that reason.

We have two drivers who are capable of improving as they get more experience. I have seen enough from both of them this season to judge they deserve to be in f1. I enjoy watching them both race in a competitive car.

Williams and proud of it.

guys i am sorry for all the name calling i have made in the last 2gp. my apologies for the team/ drivers and for the creating an atmosphere which do not support the team.. we may have different opinions... but at the end we are on board to support.. so let's get on with it...and show our appreciation of the continuous hard work that our lads do..

Did you see the first lap incident? Maldonado and Senna were 8th and 9th and Senna hadn't a better thing to do than trying to pass Maldonado in turn 6.

Why he had to do that??!! Pastor is his teammate!

I do not see anything wrong in his attempt to overtake .. the problem was the incident, only that.

No problem with them overtaking but i think they need to put the team first before the race settles down. So many weekends ruined on the first lap.

Did I miss the race or what?

Both drivers did a good job. Let's support and hope we keep challenging for 5th/6th position as often as possible.

It seems everyone else in the world thinks Williams and especially Senna had a good race all in.

Lest we forget Montreal in 2011 when Jenson Button put what is arguably one of the finest Grand Prix drives of all time. This is the kind of driver we are saying we need at Williams.

He had come from dead last after hitting his team mate in wet conditions.

Ring any bells?

Personally I think in those sorts of conditions, mistakes can be forgiven. I have driven a Formula First car in the rain on a track with other cars and it's utterly ridiculous. When Brundle says your eyes are out on stalks, he's not joking. It's massively intense and we weren't really racing as such. It's not just visibility either. You get bucket fulls of water coming in the car. It's grim!

God knows what it's like racing an F1 car in the rain.

I,ve just looked at the 2009 championship, Rosberg 34.5 points, Nakajima 0.... Senna or Maldonado might not be as good as Nico but they've both done better in two races than Nakajima achieved over a season in a much better car. Williams over the last few years just don't seem to have had clean races when they,ve had a good car. Hopefully in China we,ve kept up with development and can get two cars into q3.

Ok, lets get a little perspective.

Nakajima matched Senna's amazing result in only his second GP for the team. He finished 6th in Melbourne 2008. Ok, he crashed a few times and was effectively last, but why is is so many people celebrate Senna's race when they malign Nakajima's?

Kazuki went on to acheive two 7th's and two 8th's in the 2008 formula one season in what was a very questionable car, which equates to 28pts under the current system.

Lets see if either of these current drivers can surpass this total. winking smiley
