Qualifying pace wise Williams is in the frame for 9th to 16th really. Chances are the last 4 places on the grid will be occupied by sauber and str. The team can be flattered by the extra power settings Mercedes has over the Honda engine.

Race pace, it seems like with raw pace they could not score points. Williams would need to find 3 tenths in quali to hit q3 (plausable) and 6 tenths to match the 5th fastest team (implausible)

I guess it's not as bad as some people may have expected, but they can definitely make up that kind of performance gap over a season. In the first 5 races of 2014 the team achieved little but by the mid season they were regular podium finishers and one of the fastest developing teams due to our new concept. It's not like 2011 or 2013 in my opinion.

I'm excited by the prospect of a development season. I feel like this season Williams can only move forward whereas last season they lost their pace early then struggled to recover.

More excited than ever for qualifying and the race. Let's see how Sirotkin handles the rain and if Lance has really made a lot of progress. I wish we had a known quantity in the car. What if Massa was still 1sec faster than stroll in Australia? Williams would be up there with HAAS!

Well that's depressing. I wonder why the team is so optimistic sounding.

My reading is that the balance of the car is much improved and the tyre problem less marked compared to testing. So that has to be positive.

Sirotkin is a rookie still learning the track and we have yet to be convinced that Stroll has found real pace. Seems to me that the car is a potentially quicker than it currently shows. Which is roughly meeting realistic expectations.

I want to be optimistic but cannot see why. :/

I started being pessimistic about Williams somewhere during winter testing, then a bit less pessimistic after the pace the team has shown on harder compounds during the final testing day but I'm back to being pessimistic again now.

Ha ha ha we are all the same as Wiiliams fans. It’s just degrees of pessimism ending in depression!

No. We've got Paddy on board now. The last few years we have run a concept which was going nowhere. Now we have a proper car and it is aggressive too. Might take a while to get the best out of it but I am pleased. We didn't get much good running in FP2 and still ended up 1.6 off HAM in a properly sorted Merc. Back in the day, the gap from pole to P2 could often be that.

I think we've got some good people who can unlock the potential in this car. Maybe not win a dev race with the top 3 on sheer money but be right up at the front of the following pack and ready for that odd podium.

Also don't forget that this is one of those circuits which doesn't really indicate what will happen over the season. It's a great track but it can throw odd results sometimes.

Interestingly both cars have been running the 2018 front wing unlike in testing, so it seems it was a question of having enough spare parts.

It doesn't look any bad for us, Lance only being 3 tenths off the self proclamed best chassis of the grid with and Alonso driving it.

And this at the first race of the season with huge laptime to be unlock from this new concept unlike most of the other cars of the grid.

Amazing that as good as that car looks it's just over 2 seconds from being a contender.
