Sad race for the team. Not unexpected after qualifying and free practice, but still sad. The only bright spot is Russell, who really made the most of what he had. I hope the team can somehow give him a car at least capable of fighting.

Race Notes

Dave Robson, Senior Race Engineer: "It was a tough day as you would expect but it was an achievement to bring two cars home. Robert had an unfortunate first lap, but once we got him back out with a new front wing he was able to settle down and he drove a good race on his comeback. It was George's Formula One debut and he has had a solid weekend all round and now has his first race under his belt. This should give both drivers some confidence moving forward. The pitstops the team carried out today were very good as always, and operationally the team did a good job with what we have at the moment."

George Russell
: "I feel happy that I brought the car home with no dramas. I physically feel fine and it was a good first race from my side but obviously it is disappointing that we are so far behind the pace. We did an additional pitstop to try all three compounds of the tyres, so that is unfortunately where we are at the moment. We have got a lot of work to do tomorrow to understand and hopefully improve from there. I am not interested in fighting Robert for last, we need to work together to make this right. Overall, I can be proud and pleased with myself because we went into this weekend knowing what to expect and I achieved pretty much all of my goals."

Robert Kubica: "It definitely wasn't an easy race and we knew that before the start. We opted to start on the hard tyre to get experience on them but, I got a good start for those tyres. In turn one, I was on the inside and on the exit of the corner one of the Red Bull's moved right to avoid another contact and we touched, damaging my front wing so I had to come in to box. Additionally, on lap three, I lost one of my mirrors, so the blue flags weren't easy. I was not in the best shape with some damage but, I know it sounds strange and I thought I would never say something like this, although it was very difficult I think there were some positives. I want to thank again everyone in the team."

Oh, didn't realise it was on catch up. Is this all races? Just highlights or what?

Just watched official F1 highlights. When the highlights aren't really interesting, one can imagine how interesting the race must have been.

The second stint on softs with a clear track for both drivers. Kubica was driving with fatigued and damaged front wing, had serious floor and diffuser damage after Gasly took his front wing off while avoiding contact with Sainz. Kubica said that the tyre life/management was very good:

Thank you very much for those statistics / times
maybe some of Williams fans will appreciated RK talent just that little bet more
and some will admit that it is (at the least) OK to have him in the team
Before his announcement as second driver, they were some skeptic and some totally against him to be in the team but that's normal I suppose ...(there is still far more of good thinks to find out about RK though )
Fantastic job from GR being rookie in a very mediocre car
hi is definitely on his way to end up as top driver,
very mature for 21, very nice personality as well
I'm sure hi for one will appreciated RK skills, knowledge and help

Thanks Whitey! Whitey = Good Guy in my view too. Heart and passion in the right place - just gets a bit over-excited with his posts sometimes (all the time???)!

Interesting race. Sad to see Williams' demise, but at least they finished and have now had a full test run now on all 3 tyres, so hopefully they can build positively from here and quickly fix the "fundamental issue" highlighted by GR. It's going to be a long road from here, though.

Bravo Bottas - dominating race and great to see his ego boosted. Apparently an issue with LH's chassis, so will be interesting to see how things go next race. I suspect LH will be back with a vengeance. Hopefully Bottas' "head-psyche" can keep him believing in himself.

Ferrari a big disappointment after the pre-season hype. Hope they can regroup to find the gap back to Merc and have a true 3-way with RBR. Great first Ferrari race from Leclerc - Seb is going to have his work cut-out this year once LEC gets more comfortable with the car.

Haas certainly have a strong car. Have a better understanding of their background and challenges having watched "Drive to Survive" on Netflix (a must-watch for anyone who hasn't seen it yet). TV reporters living in fear of Guenther dropping the F-bomb on live TV now!

Renault looks to be behind Haas at this stage, but hopefully can find the gap. Disappointing start for Dan. Would have been fascinating to see the match-up with Nico, who has owned him so far in practice and quali. Alan Jones said Dan was having issues with the brake set up this weekend, so hopefully he adjusts to that. Hope they smooth out the gutter in the grass run-off area at the start - that could have caused an horrific accident for Dan and others.

Well done Norris too - fantastic qualifying. Bet Alonso was crying after that! Race didn't quite pan out for him, but looking forward to seeing his progress in the season.

I loved the battle and intrigue of the 1 point for fastest lap. No one was quite sure whether to go for it or what to do in this first race, but it's going to throw out some interesting strategy decisions. Toto said he banned the drivers from going for it pre-race, but changed his mind after Bottas scored it. Horner said they were considering bringing Gasly in for new tyres at the end just to "steal" the point from Top 10 opponents, so no one got it, which was an interesting twist.

Comparing Russell’s times with Stroll’s from last year, the car looks slower than the already flawed FW41 in qualifying, and much slower in the race (0.5-1sec per lap slower). I am sorry but this is really embarassing.

Robert Kubica:“...Once I was in clear air I was told the pace was not bad, actually it was good for the car with the state it was in, and I nearly started laughing because from the inside it felt very bad...”
UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Geezzzzzussssss that is UNBELIEVABLE.....I can't believe the team would tell him the pace was not bad, Kubica was running dead last and not catching anyone.....What the hell?

The team knows best what a car he was driving, and that makes me bit less nervous waiting for next race, let them put everything together, assemble 2 fresh chassis and we will see.
Both RK and the team need some milage to judge their pace.

I think they only have highlights this year. I got sick of paying for sky especially being as Williams are so bad recently.

Ok, thanks. I had a look. The commentary team annoys me a little . . . just the obvious. No special insight.
