Watched the race today. (I know very late!) I do believe, even with Monaco’s strangeness, we are getting better. We suddenly seem to be less adrift! Quite exciting again!!

I too just watched the race on delay (we get together with friends and make dinner and cocktails that derive from the culture where the race is hosted) and I too think that it was a step forward for the team, the first real one of the year. It may be heavily track dependent, but Williams not only competed with, but straight-up beat, Alfa Romeo. That is the first time this year they have bested an opponent by anything other than superior reliability.

Ok, by ideal standards, that isn’t much, but it’s progress from where they were. Steps in the right direction, even if small, are what I am looking for. I think we saw them this past weekend.

On the other theme of this thread, what is up with the Kubicka supporters here? I think they need to accept that the odds of him being able to recover fully his incredible speed of old, especially right away, are even longer than they were of him returning to F1 in the first place. If he is able to show his former ability again—and everyone here, I am sure, is hoping he can—it may just take a while. Let’s try to be patient with him. George was driving full-time and all-out last year (in F2), whereas Robert was not. I think it makes perfect sense that the former would be in better form to start the season, regardless of their respective talent. I think Robert may yet prove to be still world-class. Engaging in silly conspiracy theories because that has not yet happened just makes his fans look like they’ve given me up on him and are merely trying to save face. I think they should cut it out.

Last post on the subject - but I am also quite disappointed that Robert himself is complaining about the strategy. I can understand the random fanboy on the internet, but he should know better.

Did anybody pick up on the sky commentary , what I thought was a very good idea about tyres.
There was a suggestion because Monaco is a very unique track with its layout and lack of passing chances , the teams should be forced into 2 pitstops and forced to run all 3 compounds since Pirelli bring 3 choices to the track. Thought it was worthy of a mention to discuss..

The trouble with most of the ideas to spice up the racing is that they don't, often making it worse.

Once a idea is introduced there seems to be a reluctance to remove it when it is shown to be a negative, such as DRS. A Merc/Ferrari/Red Bull can sail past a Renault or McLaren with DRS removing the driver's overtaking skills as part of the race.

This year's novelty the fastest lap seems to be playing out as expected, very little is being risked for the one point and it adds nothing to the entertainment. I can't tell a fastest lap from a fast lap and it is not always shown anyway.

Terrible idea, although not as terrible as Formula E's Fan Boost. :-)

Yes adding an extra pit stop would increase the chance of an "overtake" in the pit lane but that is hardly exciting and the differences in the tyres wouldn't be enough to allow a real over take.

Leclerc did make some passes in this year's race but it was at the cost of risking it all and being forced out of the race, and he lost that bet.

Instead how about the teams being allowed a new single use engine/gearbox for Monaco?

Honda may have an extra 50hp they are reluctant to use because it would break the engine over 4/5 races.

Even better Honda may turn up with an extra 100hp and no idea if it will last the race or not, a Red Bull Honda driving away from the Mercs but will it last the race? Smoke and oil pouring out on the last lap, isn't that what F1 is about.

Bye

Ian

Ian, the nature of the circuit wouldnt really mean the extra power is going to be usable apart from pulling away through the tunnel which then removes one of the overtaking spots. Can't see teams making a Monaco special either on cost grounds. I like the spirit of your idea though and seeing breakdowns used to be part and parcel of F1. I think the tyres idea though is workable because let's face it, the only overtaking at Monaco is going to be done in the pits.

Easy enough in the heat of the moment. In a news article on motorsport he confirms that he stayed out hoping for rain.

Not so sure about cost grounds, remove the fuel flow restrictions and let's just see how much risk the engine makers want to take.

The mid 1980s had 1,000hp engines without electrical assistance and if F1 doesn't want to be extreme it might as well give up and let Formula E take over.

Once you get to a certain level, whether that be 1,200hp or 1,500hp you get to the point of the driver can't cope with the power so no more development is needed.

It is all about the driver, who can take a 15g corner, even if the car can do it with an autopilot at 17g?

Bye

Ian
