Why didn't this guy stay at Renault? Did Renault not want him anymore?

Why didn't Renault keep him?

My guess is that Williams is a good chance for a race drive in 2021 when Russell probably leaves to Mercedes.

Good point Francesc, I guess they will be evaluating both him and Ticktum for the non-paid seat in 2021. Will be interesting to see how they get on. I'm not aware of any other team having such a large pool of drivers. So far we have:

Russell
Latifi
Aitken
Ticktum
Nissany
Chadwick

Is this normal?

Seems like Williams are creating their own driver program on a bigger scale maybe. Seems the way to go and so many drivers are affiliated with F1 teams before they get a drive.

It's not unusual and other teams also have multiple test/development drivers.

That is a pool of drivers any team can have easily! Likes of Nissany or Chadwick can't be on anyone's list.

I could be more glad with having Sirotkin in place of 3 or 4 of them. The guy was a good match for Lance in his rookie year.probably had alot of potential to be unlocked on his second year.

As was being said on the Autosport forum:
Mercedes last year had Ocon, Vandoorne, Gutierrez, de Vries, Kari, Mazepin, Davidson & Leigh in the simulator

Is it a thing now for teams to have 6 or 7 Sim / Test drivers in their team???

Did F1 teams always have 6 or 7 Sim / Test drivers in their team or is this something new???

Just curious what year did F1 teams first use simulators???

In the 80's or did they have simulators before the 80's???

Well, yes. Because there were testing rigs. Those were the ancient simulators.

As seen here back in the early 90s:

Those rigs were used by engine manufacturers in the 70s also.

Nowadays it's a full time job to race in the simulator. And you need multiple drivers to do so.
