It would be a frustrating Qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix for the AT&T Williams team. Both drivers were outside the top ten. Alex admitted to making a mistake on his last lap seeing him finish in 15th, while Nico was down in 12th. Not a great start to the new season.

Australian GP Qualifying

With Nico Rosberg confirming that he had an electronic problem with his car during the final practice session the Williams team prepared for qualifying for the 2007 Australian Grand Prix. Qualifying would again be three periods with drivers been able to complete their lap so long as they cross the finish line prior to the chequered flag. In the first two periods the slowest six drivers would be eliminated. The final period sees the drivers running with the fel that they will use in the race.

WurzThe first fifteen minute period Q1 would get underway with Albers taking to the track first. Other drivers would come out including Davidson, Button, Schumacher, Trulli, and Sato. Albers time was 1m:32.300. Both Alex and Nico were out on the track with ten minutes left in the session. Davidson was fastest, 1m:29.211, with Ralf second. The times would start to come down with Trulli now fastest, 1m:28.709. Coulthard was now fastest as Alex moved into eighth, 1m:29.817. Nico would move into a fantastic second, 1m:28.651, but there was still a lot of quick drivers to come.

Hamilton was now fastest, 1m:26.674, with Webber second. Alex was now in fifth with a 1m:28.605, and Nico would move into fourth with a 1m:28.424. Five minutes remaining and Alex would pit. Nico would join him. Alonso was now in second. Nico was now in fifth and Alex seventh. They would drop down one extra place when Raikkonen moved into the top spot with a 1m:26.644.

With just minutes remaining both Nico and Alex were still in their pits. Nico was now in ninth and Alex thirteenth. Both driver would return to the track for their final run of Q1. Alex was in sixteenth and facing the prospect of been dropped after Q1. Both drivers would set personal best times in sector one and two. Nico would move up to twelfth, 1m:27.596. Alex would move into tenth pushing Nico down one place. Nico was now in sixteenth. Nico was lucky to make it into Q2.

The drivers that were eliminated were Barrichello, Speed, Coulthard, Liuzzi, Sutil, and Albers.

With Alex and Nico finishing Q1 in thirteenth and sixteenth positions Q2 was going to be difficult. Q2 would get underway with no one looking very interested in coming out. Nico would be the first out joined by Alex. Trulli would come down the pit lane with a trolley jack connected to the back of his car. It would fall away on the exit to the pit lane. Nico was on his first lap finishing with a time of 1m:27.723. Davidson would go fastest and Alex was now second, 1m:27.527.

Fisichella was now fastest, 1m:26.545, and Webber second. Alex and Nico was seventh and eighth. Both drivers would pit. Half the session had been run with eight drivers having set a time. Ralf would put his car in the garage with a gearbox problem, but he would be able to return. Hamilton was now fastest from Kubica. Alex and Nico were now in ninth and eleventh. Alonso was now second.

WurzWith four minutes left Heidfeld was now in third. Raikkonen would move into third seeing Alex and Nico drop to twelfth and fourteenth. Nico was back out for his final run. He would be joined by Alex. Massa had yet to set a time. Hamilton was still fastest, 1m:25.577. Massa was to slow out on the track with a problem, ending his qualifying. Both Alex and Nico were on quick laps. Nico was in tenth but this became eleventh as Ralf moved ahead of him into ninth.

With the end of the period Alonso was fastest, 1m:25.326, followed by Heidfeld, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Kubica, Fisichella, Webber, Trulli, Schumacher, and Sato. The drivers to be eliminated were Davidson, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Button, Wurz, and Massa.

With both Williams drivers not making it through Q2 it was confirmed that Massa's problem was gearbox related. Not the best way for the Williams team to complete the session but they were joined by some big names, including Button, Barrichello, and Massa.

With the start of Q3 all ten cars would come out with Raikkonen leading. The drivers would start the period with the fuel load that they will start the race. The drivers would start their usual practice of running laps to burn off fuel prior to making their quick runs. Fastest in the early running was Heidfeld, 1m:29.951.

Alex admitted that he made a mistake at Turn fifteen and this cost him time. He just over did things trying to push into the top ten. The first drivers to pit would be Fisichella and Hamilton. Alonso was also in. There would be a rush of drivers coming in for new tyres. The times should start to come down. Five minutes remaining and Fisichella was fastest. His time would be beaten by Hamilton, 1m:27.190, but Alonso would beat him, 1m:27.050. Raikkonen was now fastest, 1m:26.072. Heidfeld was in second.

Fisichella would pit again, joined by Hamilton and Alonso. There was enough time for one final lap. Everyone was out on the track with thirty seconds left in the session. The session would end with Hamilton now second. Alonso would move in second ahead of his team-mate. Heidfeld would move into third, splitting the two McLaren's. So Raikkonen would take his first pole for Ferrari. Joining him on the front row as Alonso.

For the Williams team the first qualifying session of the season did not produce the results that were hoped. The big question is whether or not the team can turn this disappointment around and look to securing at least a points scoring finish in the first race of the season.
