Theissen urges caution

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen has commented on the stories that have the WilliamsF1 team designing a radically different car for the 2003 season.

Theissen has no doubt that the team will start the 2003 season with a competitive car, "I am convinced that in the fourth year of their collaboration BMW and WilliamsF1 will start with a competitive car. In this way, we want to be a serious challenger in the struggle for the title, of course, even if this may seem presumptuous considering Ferrari’s current superiority."

But at the same time he feels that the WilliamsF1 team must weigh up the need to start the season with a car that will challenge the Ferrari's against the possibility that it may have a detrimental affect on other areas such as reliability.

Theissen added: "I cannot promise right now just when we will draw level with Ferrari. One thing is certain: our total package must get better in all fields.

"We need an aggressive strategy, but we must not run every risk and thereby jeopardise our reliability."

BMW is on schedule to test the new P84 V10 engine, which will be mated to the FW25, in November.
