| After an encouraging day of
testing for the BMW WilliamsF1 team it would be Ralf Schumacher who would
set the fastest time of the day. Ralf and Marc Gene concentrated on testing
the Michelin tyres and setting up their vehicles.
The days testing was again delayed in the morning as the teams had to
contend with showers soaking the track. It was not until around the middle
of the day before the track would dry allowing for quick times. But there
was the benefit of allowing Michelin to test their latest wet weather tyres. Tim Newton, WilliamsF1 Test Team Manager, commented on the days testing: “Again we were held up by rain showers today but were pleased that Marc Gené was able to complete a race distance. Ralf took full advantage of the only dry track window of the day and secured the best time on an otherwise wet track day. We made some changes on Ralf’s car during the day to isolate and fix a problem. Tomorrow we have a driver change with Juan Pablo and Antonio joining the test team and we are hoping for a stable weather forecast." From Thursday Juan Pablo
Montoya and Antonio Pizzonia will take over the testing duties for the team. Seventh saw McLaren's David Coulthard, but he was not happy with the performance of the car on this sort of circuit. Eighth was taken by Renault's Jarno Trulli. Renault Technical Director Mike Gascoyne commenting: "A good day for the team, during which the drivers worked well. We had productive results from our tyre work this morning and successfully completed a full race distance." Nick Heidfeld finished ninth. He said: "We have made good progress today. However, I lost two hours while the Team cleaned the foam in the car from the fire extinguisher. We lost momentum of testing when the track was dry. When we started again after 5.30 pm a light rain made it very slippery to improve lap time. Overall, I am well pleased with the way the car handled." Behind Heidfeld came Jenson Button in tenth and in eleventh was BAR's Jacques Villeneuve who would suffer an engine problem. Toyota continued the running with Stephane Sarrazin, but regular driver Allan McNish took over the second car. Minardi's Alex Yoong returned to the track after his break from racing but was the slowest driver. He would complete seventy four laps without any problems |
